Violet Name Meaning

A floral name that’s been blooming in use, Violet is of English origins. Named after the flowering purple plant, Violet is a name primed for picking in today’s busy baby girl name scene.

Violet hits all the right marks when it comes to today’s trends. She works well with nature names like Willow and Lily but also pals around with colorful choices like Sienna and Ebony without any fuss. Best of all, she’s got the old-lady chic feel seen in Amelia and Audrey. This trifecta of style leaves little wonder why parents can’t get enough of her.

In addition to fitting certain genres, Violet has some in-demand sounds in her name that are trending, from her vivacious V start to her chic -let ending. The letter V has been a big time hit in the girl scene with Olivia, Evelyn, Avery, and Valeria all containing the va-va voom letter. In addition, the -let sound has been winning over parents with Charlotte and Scarlett.

Violet is a delicate name, bringing to mind dollhouses and porcelain dolls. Pearls and lace are favorites of hers, as are quiet nights at home in the library with a good book.

Some variants of Violet include Viola and Violetta. Similar names are Scarlett, Vivienne, and Vienna.

  8. We had a short list of names that we liked for our baby girl and was pretty set on one after finding out her gender. Then on Christmas morning I woke up with the name Violet in my head. I’m not sure where it came from since I hadn’t seen it anywhere. We knew our baby girl would be born in spring and I love flowers so I was drawn to floral names and names that were timeless and classic. We still didn’t call her anything until my husband realized how much he also liked the name Violet. We waited until we met her to see if it fit and after spending the day with her in the hospital, we were certain she is a Violet. Our little spring flower.

  9. Violet is a family name! My grandfather grandmother’s name was Violet. We loved the name is she is our beautiful little flower.

One girl loves her name so much that she plans on naming her first daughter Violet too!

  22. I’m a Horticulturist, and always wanted to name my children after plants. Violet seemed like a natural choice, as it also runs in the family, starting from my great grandmother Violet Nelli. Also I love that it is an old fashioned name too.

  24. We chose Violet after eliminating many many other classic females names. We already had Grace chosen as a middle name and Violet Grace rang a classic and sweet tone to us.

  25. We always pick family names for our children. I loved the name Violet but never knew it was my grandma’s mother’s last name when she remarried later in life. So it was in the family after all! I didn’t know many Violet’s but I feel like it is becoming more and more popular.
