Grace Name Meaning

A virtue name with a lovely meaning, Grace has the heart of a lion with a sound as soft as a lamb. She’s friendly and approachable yet regal and divine, a moniker held by actress and princess, Grace Kelly. She’s also an all-star middle name choice like Marie and Elizabeth.

Derived from the Latin word gratia, Grace started her rise in the time of the Puritans, much like Abigail. She’s a one-syllable choice like the fashionable Claire with common use in everyday speech that makes misspellings nearly impossible. She’s a standout among other popular names, as word names are typically more common in boys than girls. It’s an understated cool factor that she shares with Willow and Autumn.

A little Grace is delicate and dainty, quick with her manners and polite as can be. She knows how to curtsy and loves to play dress up but isn’t afraid of adventure. She loves escaping to great new worlds through her own imagination whether she’s playing make-believe or reading a storybook. Of course if she’s anything like her name implies, she’d be a skilled athlete or dancer as well.

Variants of the name include Gracie, Gracelyn, and Graciela. Other virtue names that might tickle your fancy are Hope, Verity, Amity, and Felicity.

  1. We chose Grace because Jesus blessed us with her on Easter Weekend. My husband and I both loved the name the moment we heard it. Every Grace we have ever known has always been so sweet and kind so we are honored to name our daughter Grace.

  2. We chose Grace because of the meaning, some complications we had in the first trimester, and the constant reminder when we say her name to think of having grace with oneself and others!

  3. We chose Grace to remind us of the amazing Grace God has given to us, including the life of this precious child.

  4. I’m the grandmother which is my son’s daughter and my granddaughter is the most beautiful girl in the world

  5. I love the meaning of Grace: unmerited favor. I like how it sounds and the reminder of what we have when we are God’s children.

  6. So in love with this sweet girl.

  7. Classic

  8. I chose her name because I felt that God spoke me concerning her name her. I’ve held onto it since middle school. I like that it means divine favor.

  9. I chose the name grace because it was our friends daughters middle name and I looked up the biblical meaning of that name and it was perfect for everything that we did to have her

  10. First I think about God’s grace poured into me giving me a chance to be a mother, and then I also think about my mother in law who was so welcoming and loving and her name was Grace too.

  11. after my grandma

  12. My 14 year old daughter is called Grace. I knew she was going to be a girl as soon as I knew I was pregnant and Grace unexpectedly came out of nowhere as a name to my mind within days of finding out I was expecting. I had never considered it before that point. It was like she was really meant to be called Grace and the universe was going to make sure I got the message. I battled with another name Lucia and reasoned on Lucia-Grace to compromise to this little voice on my shoulder whispering its wishes on her first name but I couldn’t shake of the strong feeling it should be her first name. So it was done. And although it felt in a strange way I had no say in her name (because it seemed it was already chosen for her by divine intervention) I quickly learnt to love the name, its history and the femininity and delicacy of it.
Despite learning the name was popular after she was born at the time of her birth in the UK, she was the only Grace in infant and middle school in her year group and most of high school until another Grace joined her year group a couple years later. And I actually don’t hear of many Graces in my town be it young or old. So her name is rare here.

  13. God chose her name.

  14. Grace – has so many meanings – growing up with being taught the definition of what Grace means not only receiving and giing to others, but also trying to fully understand and comprehend God’s Grace when we don’t deserve it. My parents prayed over us kids before they were born for favor and that is a synonym to Grace. Also – love to be able to shorten the name to “ACE“. I have always said if i ever have a girl i will name her Grace. Had to convince some siblings not to take the name before me!

  15. Her name was given to me as a word from God when I was trying to figure out what to name her before we even knew she was a girl. We knew we wanted something biblical but I wasn’t a fan of the biblical women names so as I was doing my daily reading, He spoke to me and told me what to name her. I love all that it stands for and it’s a reminder of what God gives us even though we don’t deserve it and we should strive to give it to others as well. I also love her name came from our Heavenly Father and not from one of us. I guess if I had to dislike anything about it is that I’m now finding more and more people with that name. As a teacher it’s hard to pick names I like that don’t have some kind of memory attached to another student. I have never taught a Grace but now I’m meeting more and more people who have used the name Grace in their children’s name. But that’s not a big deal.

  16. I’m religious so it just feels good to know God fave me Grace (my baby)
I also love her nickname (Gracie)

  17. I’ve always loved the name since I was little. It always brought me peace. Her middle name comes from her great grandmother.

  18. After three miscarriages we settled on the name Grace if we had the chance again to have a child and it be a daughter. For it would be by the Grace of God alone we would have a child. We are so pleased with her presence in our family and with the choice of her name.

  19. Because i have a grandma who name is Gracie
I like the name grace Because it is part of Jesus and has something to do with Christmas

  20. Me and her father named her Grace because God had a lot of Grace the session in our life when we had her ?!

  21. I chose Grace because God blessed me with her at the most crucial time of my life so i thank him everyday for his grace and my baby Grace.

  22. God graced us with this sweet baby after our miscarriage in 2019. She was a surprise gift from our Father.

  23. We wanted a name that was meaningful and had family connection.

  24. We wanted something short and sweet, Grace works well with the last name as well!

  25. I’ve always loved the name Grace, but the day I found out I was pregnant I read one of my devotionals and it mentioned thanking God for his amazing grace, and how we should always trust His timing. When our pregnancy was confirmed with an hCG test I told my husband I had a feeling we were having a girl and her name would be Grace. Her middle name is MaryAnne, and I got that because I had prayed to The Virgin Mary before and during my pregnancy and also to Saint Anne. So we decided to combine Mary and Anne. Also, my husband’s mom is Marilyn and mine is JoAnn, so we added the grandmas in there too.

  26. God’s grace is something we definitely needed to make it through her birth where the midwife didn’t make it in time. My husband and I ended up delivering her alone at home. We didn’t know the gender before the birth. The name Grace was on our list of potential girl names. When her birth didn’t happen at all according to plan God’s grace saw us through. We also felt strongly that during this year of 2020 we all need to focus on God’s grace and hope (her middle name). Additionally, we now have a Brad(hubby), Brady (son), Halle, Hannah (daughters), Graham (son) and Grace. All the names go with each other well. It is fun.

  27. Anayah ggarce is is beautiful name it means God’s answer

  28. We’ve always loved the name Grace. After a miscarriage and several other trials in our lives, when the lord gave us our baby girl, it seemed fitting to recognize God’s great grace to us by naming our daughter Grace.

  29. I can summarize my life in one word (grace) I’m where i am today by God’s grace I’m a child of God by HIS grace everything we are as a family is by HIS grace! Thank You Jesus ?

  30. Actually Grace was not our choice. We have a son and my hearts desire was to have a daughter even though I was already 41 at the time I was out running and talking to God about it and I felt I heard in my spirit that I was going to have a daughter and to name her Grace and she would be a gift and bring a season of favour into our lives. Grace means unmerited, undeserved favour and a gift as well as the power to do what we otherwise couldn’t. We prayed until I conceived and it was a girl and she is perfect and we definitely need so much grace in this season with our 2 year old having some developmental delay challenges. Grace has been such a blessing.

  31. I have chosen all of our baby’s names because of the meanings of them. Grace means God’s favor, graceful, eloquence or beauty of form, kindness, mercy, favor and love.

  32. I named her Grace because I was never able to get pregnant before. I had tried with previous partners and even when I was in a bad place in life I attempted to get pregnant so I wouldn’t be alone and it never happened. I finally settled down with a man that loves me beyond words and I truly believe God was showing me His Grace when I got pregnant with her.

  33. Grace is our daughters middle name

  34. When my husband and I first started dating 10 years ago, we had a random conversation about what baby names we liked. We both immediately said if either of us ever had a baby girl, we would name her Grace. It sounded like the most beautiful, classic girl’s name. Flash forward to 9 years later, after we were married and found out we were expecting a baby girl of our own, there was no question about what we would name her!

  35. My husband and I loved the names “Hannah” and “Grace” … but as hard as we tried, we kept ending up with 3 names – “Hannah”, “Grace” and my own middle name. So, my hubby came up with the inspirational idea to combine 2 of them into one name. “HannahGrace” … we continue to get compliments for our daughters and their names.

  36. We decided on this name TWO WEEKS after our child was born! It was important to wait for the moment of “knowing,” even if our baby was named “Baby” for awhile! Like many people, we mostly had Grace planned as a middle name, because we felt it was too popular of a name. But I was 44.5 when I had her, plus had health issues which concerned me regarding the birth. But everything worked out with such beauty and support from the universe, that we had this moment almost 2 weeks after having her (and the pressure was on to get her name figured out) where we tearfully discussed the miracle of the whole process of having her, and we realized she WAS Grace! It fits her perfectly and I love having her have a name with meaning.

    • I got the chills reading your story! Congratulations to you Sydney!

  37. Grace is our second daughter. She is almost 6. She has a fire in her. If she’s afraid she hides it and goes on boldly. She can be stubborn too. She has a more subtle sweet side. Some day she may take over the world… or at least run a household efficiently. Her middle name is Michelle.
