Teething Symptoms: 7 Signs Your Baby is Teething

Is your baby showing teething symptoms, or are they fussy for some other reason? If baby is exhibiting any of these seven signs, she is almost certainly teething.

Is your baby showing teething symptoms, or are they fussy for some other reason? Well, if you see these 7 signs, they almost certainly are teething.

Whether it’s brushing those teeth after they finally arrive or waiting for them to come in, baby teeth sure cause a lot of trouble! The process of getting these teeth can be effortless or excruciating depending on your baby. Even with minor cases, most babies show some teething symptoms.

When Do Babies Start Teething?

The tricky thing about teething is that symptoms can start 2 to 3 months before a tooth surfaces! This can be brutal for baby and family if there’s a lot of discomfort.

Teething Symptoms: How Do You Know If Your Baby is Teething?

Watch this video to find out.

The key is to look for these seven teething symptoms

1. Biting more than usual

This teething symptom will turn your baby into a vampire. Bite, bite, bite on anything from plastic spoons, to toys, to your breast. Griffin liked chewing on hard plastic things the best., but there’s a plethora of teething toys on the market which may also help.

2. Excessive drool

When babies are still newborns, they’re still learning how to swallow their saliva—this causes excessive drooling. Fast forward to teething, and the drooling starts again (or never stops in some cases). When baby is teething, the body creates extra saliva to lubricate the tender and bulging gums.

3. Fussier than usual, especially at night

These teething symptoms make babies who once slept through the night start to wake up several times for comfort. In the quiet hours of night, a baby often feels the teething pain more because there are fewer distractions.

4. Disturbances in sleep patterns

Because of teething discomfort, babies will usually nap less and wake up earlier in the morning. Fun times for all involved with these teething symptoms!

5. Fever, rashes, cough, and diarrhea

Although some doctors disagree, many mamas detect a slight fever (under 100 degrees) in their babies when teeth are imminent. Additionally, the extra drool can cause facial rashes, chafing, and coughing, since it pools at the back of the throat. Some babies even develop diaper rash and diarrhea.

6. Decreased appetite

When babies are in pain, they generally don’t want to eat, especially since it triggers their sore spots. Keep trying to feed them as much as possible, despite the resistance. Call your doctor if baby’s caloric input decreases dramatically.

7. Pulling of ears and rubbing of chin and cheeks

Babies can be quite resourceful and administer self massage. By pulling and rubbing around their jaw, they create counter pressure that eases some of the pain and throbbing.

Baby Teething Pain Relief

While all of these baby teeth come in, we don’t have to be victims to teething symptoms. There are some great things we can do to comfort baby in the midst of the teething process:

  1. Lower inflammation: Inflammation from teething stimulate nerves, causing pain.
  2. Boost the immune system: There is some debate whether teething lowers the immune system, or whether the emergence of colds and fevers while teething is simply a coincidence. Either way, boosting baby’s immunity can’t hurt.
  3. Apply cold and pressure: Cold helps numb the area, while pressure soothes inflamed gums.
  4. Try teething toys: Safe and non-toxic objects that baby can chew apply counter pressure to aching gums.
  5. Herbal remedies: To help ease teething pain, make an herbal tea, soak a washcloth, freeze it, then let baby chew on it.

  2. My grand daughter has been showing signs of teething for a couple of months. Her lower gums even got white like teeth were coming thru, but then nothing and back to normal color. She is 10 months old. Always chewing on something, drooling a lot and grabs at her ear like it hurts. Should we be worried or is she just slow at getting her teeth in?

  3. Dear Genevieve,

Is my wonderful Amara showing teething signs?

    – Last week wasn’t eating as much as usual and didn’t want to eat while sitting, preferred us both lying down.
    – Since yesterday she’s eating a lot and then just chilling/suckling when done eating.
    – After eating she kind of pouts her lips and plays with her tongue
    – Puts everything in her mouth that is close to her; fingers and cuddlies (at the same time if possible)
    – Fusier
    – Harder time falling a sleep in the evening.
    – Poop smells sour.

Thanks for all your amazing information and the weekly emails! It’s been and still is a great source of good information.

  4. So what are some recommended options for babies who are premature and not quite there as far as chewing on stuff I’ve tried all sorts of different teething rings but hes not interested he was 8 weeks premature so developmentally hes around 4 months and just started chewing on his hands just not everything else yet

  5. when will team mama natural gives answers to questions been asked? why r u here if u always refer Mum’s to their doctors?

    • Because we are not doctors we can’t give medical advice. It’s always best to seek out the opinion of your medical provider, they have the degree to diagnose and treat and they know your medical history.

  6. My baby is almost 7mnths he has running nose, coughing and heating too

  7. my son is 3 months old and has a running tummy. could it be teething already

  8. My baby he’s now one year but no teeth he worries me.

    • My friend has 3 kids and they all didn’t teeth till after their first bday. 🙂 they are completely fine and all got their teeth eventually

  9. Pls my child is two years she touch her ear, refuses food, feeling discomfort, refuses to talk, often sleep and putting her finger in the mouth. Pls what is wrong

  10. My cute little boy is 3+months old. For about a month now he’s been having coughs, and drooling. He also has a mild fever; head feels warm and when I cuddle him, the body parts that are closer feel warm. I also noticed some diaper rash and his forehead is always sweaty. I took him to see the doctor who prescribed some Vitamin C, antibiotics, analgesic, and piriton. These gave him alongside breast-feeding. The coughing reduced but the temperature remained. I took him in again, I was asked to run a test, after which I was asked to continue with the drugs earlier prescribed. I also got him a silicon teether because he’d been biting at his fingers. Lately, his wake up between sleep is more frequent and he cries and gets restless during the daytimes. Also he feeds less which is making him loose weight slightly. There are noticeable ridges on his gum. I believe these to be signs of some teeth cutting through his gums. But the doctor won’t admit that when I asked. Although I have been doing all I could to help my cute boy, in doing is how I came by this webpage during my search online for remedies. I really don’t have any idea as to how long this discomfort would take. May God help us all as we nurse and care for our lovely babies at this time. All the best.

    • Remember, doctors get paid for every prescription that is filled. Make sure you have a good, well- known doctor that is doing everything in your child’s best interest.

  11. Hello my 10 months old daughter got a cold 5days ago and is still there she wakes up constantly at night crying all the time has got some diaper rash doesn’t want to eat anything and won’t breastfeed too is it a sign of teething or is something else please help am really worried

  12. my baby boy turning 3years
    his having
    *eye infection red
    *rush under the neck
    *temperature 39degrees
    *pass out green poop

    What could it be Dr

    • Please contract your child’s medical provider.

  13. Go to the doctor!

  14. What is the best type of amber teething necklace? I want only the best for my baby.

    • Do not expect to purchase quality necklaces for pennies. High quality should cost at least $45-$150. Choose another product if that amount puts you into an uncomfortable situation financially. If you want the best quality, you can buy it from Europe, especially from Lithuania. For me the best brand is ambernecklaceforteething.com

      • I wouldn’t recommend any amber necklaces for teething. They’re expensive and my cousins baby almost strangled herself on it. Besides all that, there is no guarantee that the necklaces actually work, so why risk your baby’s life for a possible teething aid? Is fashion worth that? Just do what women in my family have done for generations; stick a wet washcloth in the freezer, and then in baby’s mouth on the sore spots. It’s non-fatal.

  15. My almost 9 month old began waking up screaming two nights ago. Normally He sleeps pretty well. He hasn’t had any teeth come in yet, could they be ready to emerge?

  16. Hi Ashley! I’m from West Africa and this is what my mum (she never had any formal education ) had to say concerning teething in infants ” If the child’s teeth will come from water, she would have DIARRHOEA , on the other hand if it will come from stone, she would have a HEADACHE” . Interesting lol! That’s an old wives’ tale, but I understand her anyway. On a more serious note your baby is going to be alright. it’s just a passing phase. Good luck!

  17. I’m confused due to a reliable website ,”experts says there’s no scientific proof that diarrhea is one of the symptoms of teething.” My lil girl is teething and have watery stool that has now cause her to have a rash, no fever, no cough, a lot of drool and chewing on her binky and toys oh also fussy than usual. Should I be concerned about her having diarrhea or it’s normal???

    • That’s a great question for your child’s provider!

  18. My 5 month old was sleeping 10 hours through the night. 4 nights ago she woke up crying and hasn’t slept very much. She seems to just want to nurse. No fever as of yet and she’s been chewing and sucking on everything. Tonight she started grabbing her ear. Is there any key points to ensure it is teething and not an ear infection?

  19. My 3months daughter is sucking her top lip very hard, fast and frequentl for the day.

  20. My 3 month old is blowing a lot of raspberries/ spitting as well as a few of the other symptoms. Would you think this is also an indicator that my LO is teething?

    • Could be!

    • To be honest my LO blows raspberries a lot but I wouldn’t link it with teething. As soon as he learnt how to do it he hasn’t stopped and I just think it’s because it’s new to him and it’s how he expresses himself.

  21. My baby is almost 7 months he’s having a bad cough and runny nose. He sometimes refuses to eat and is fussy at night always breastfeeding. He likes chewing on anything he touches im really worried.

    • It sounds like he may be teething. However, it’s best to speak with his provider if he’s refusing food.

  22. I was surprised to see that diarrhoea is on the list which healthcare professionals refuse to claim its related to teething. I once spoke to someone in the healthcare system, they explained to me that when a child goes though the biting phase, the closest thing they can get hold of is their hands, which contains dirt/bacteria which then causes them to have diarrhoea.

  23. My 10 months old have fever for 4 days with colds and coughing that makes her to throw-up and rejects foods, bite everything, wake up early than usual, poop a little bit watery, pull her ears and feel comfort when I touch her jaws. Are these possible signs of my daughters teething?

  24. My 11 months old baby has fever, URTI, has a greenish poop color, irritated, rejects food, rubbing her face and other possible signs of teething. Could this possibly be teething or some other sort of infections, taking first 3signs?. Please I need guidance. Tnks

    • Please ask your provider for guidance.

  25. I think my 45months boy is teething. . Is it normal for a 45months toddler to be teething?

    • Check with their provider to be sure.

    • It is normal for babies & toddlers to teeth up to 4-5 years. When they’re toddlers, they get their molars. It’s not so much of a bother to them later on, but some toddlers do experience pain & discomfort. I would take him/her to the Dr just to make sure. My 4 month old is our 3rd baby, & he’s already showing signs of teething but I couldn’t remember if it was possible at 4 months or not. It’s been 8 years since my last baby, but I do remember my older 2 did teeth again during their toddler years when their molars came in.

  26. My grandson is 13,5 years old and no teeth yet.
    Please help

    • Sorry 13,5 months old

    • Some babies just take longer to teeth. If your grandson’s parents have checked with his Dr & he’s not worried, I wouldn’t be either. Most kids don’t get all their teeth until 4-5 years & then they start to lose them at 6-12 years for their adult teeth. But if his parents haven’t taken him to the Dr about it yet, I’d make sure they do. There is a condition where some of the teeth fail to come down & is really painful for the baby. Good luck!

  27. I noticed my little boy who’s gonna be 6 in 2 weeks time is experiencing fever, drooling ( which has always been there) rubbing his eyes and chin, cries a lot now and has cut down on food( he likes eating). I also noticed rashes on his thighs and hands. I’m worried it might be something else.i had to come online and check
    Worried Dad

    • Contact your child’s health care provider.

  28. She’s purging and vomiting

  29. Read the article my 3 month old son has 4 out of 7 teething signs…. Excessive drool, Fussier than usual, especially at night, Disturbances in sleep patterns and Decreased appetite.. I am not sure if he is teething or not; he has colic so I not sure if the fussier than usual is a sign of the colic or if something else is bothering him. He used nurse pretty good but now doesn’t really want to nurse but will take the bottle. Would love some feedback..

  30. My baby is all time crying. Doctor says your baby is healthy. Its only due to habits or teething…Could please suggest how to tackle this…

  31. My baby of 1 year and 4 month is having constant hot forehead and stomach ,cough, and catarrh for the past one month, not stable ,it will leave her it will come back again, please is this a symptom of teeth ,or what can i do?

    • Check with your provider to be safe.

      • My grandson is 9 months he’s been teething non stop also drooling and grunting its really so sad that no doctor can come up with anything for our little ones to help this pain please if anyone has tried anything defferent let us no I’m a 56 year old grandfather that needs help

    • Was this teething? My son has the same thing?

  32. My daughter is 8months old..shes having diarrhea rashes on face and body runny nose and cough as well not eating any thing…please help….what indicates these… Is it related to first teething or measles…

    • My granddaughter had those symptoms, she was allergic to milk, we had to change her to soy.

  33. My daughter is 5month old and she has fever n vomiting sometimes and lost weight at the sametime is it part of teething signs coz now is 3days

  34. My son is almost 9 months and hasn’t cut any teeth. He has a cough that isn’t very persistent but it sounds wet. He was just at the doctor for an ear I infection and thrush, should I take him in again?

    • Ear infections are very common during teething phases. The extra drool will drip into the ears & the drainage from the sinus’ also drain into the ear canal & cause ear infections. That’s very normal. 9 months without cutting a tooth isn’t abnormal. It sounds like they’re teething for sure. Some babies just take longer for the teeth to come in. If the Dr isn’t worried about it, then you shouldn’t be either. Good luck! Teething is a very hard time in a baby”s life & the parents life! It’s the 1st time they experience consistent pain & we can’t take it away from them! Infant Tylenol & freezer teething toys is about all we can do for them & sometimes it’s not enough!

    • My son is 9.5 months old and he has just started teething. Doc says babies can start teething as late as 15 months.

  35. After a tooth is poking how long it takes for the pain lose of apatite cough to go away ???

    • It can sometimes take weeks. Teeth usually come in pairs of 2s. So if she/he has 1 tooth poking through, chances are another one (it’s pair) is about to poke through as well. So just because 1 has erupted, they can still be teething. Also, there is no sure way to know because as soon as 1 pair erupt, it can be days or weeks or even months before the next pair erupt. Just depends on how fast your baby’s teeth are going to come in. If their symptoms of pain haven’t subsided within a week after you don’t see any teeth below the gums, you can take them to their Dr just to make sure it isn’t something else. Ear infections are very very common in baby’s that are teething so you want to make sure it’s not that too. With ear infections sometimes there’s no fever to hint towards anything wrong & only signs you see is the baby tugging on a peticular ear & fussiness from pain.

  36. My son just turned 5 months and his two bottom teeth are out already ?
And he wakes up out of nowhere in the middle of the night crying and screaming ? It’s so sad to see him like this. But he’s so tiered, he cries while he’s asleep.
My little brother was born with teeth, and by age 3 or 4 he had all his teeth already?
Anyways we just have to give our LO teething toys. No medicine for pain. Because it’s bad for them.

    • Pain medicine as far as infant Tylenol & ibprophen along with baby orajel aren’t perfectly safe to take as directed (unless they have allergies) for teething. It lessens their pain, drops their fever if they have one from teething, & gives them relief from the first time they’ve ever experienced constant pain. Please don’t bad mouth medication that you *chose* not to give your child to relieve them of their pain. Medication given as directed is safe to give for teething. Our 3rd baby is teething & I feel 100% OK with giving him Tylenol & orajel, which is the same that I did for my older 2 & they’re 100% perfectly healthy & they all received pain relief instead of being made to experience every bit of it.

  37. My little man is 1yr 2months and he is very uncomfortable past two days and last night he slept very late for 2 hr and was up cried so much was even calling “Mamaaa, mama” and I figured his feeling pain from teething but the Calpol helps him a lot and am glad you proved me right of judgement because his mother gets so worried.

  38. My son is 2 1/2 months old and is drooling a lot more than usual and is more fussy than normal. His gums look like they might be teething but I don’t know much about it. His dad was born with a tooth. Is it genetic? Could he be teething already?

    • Hi Veronica. My son started teething at 2 months. At 10 weeks he had 1 tooth already cutting the gums. He is now 12 weeks and has 2 teeth cutting gums. So it’s definitely possible he’s teething. My LO symptoms: excess drool, pulling ear, chewing on hands (I call them hand sandwiches), irritableness growing over the weeks, not able to go to sleep on his own. At night is the worst for him. During the day is fine. Listen to your instincts and call the doctor if need be!

      • Omg thank you for this! I thought I was just crazy thinking my two and a half month old was teething but now I feel like he is! I put a itty bitty bit of orajel on his gum where I felt he was teething at and he knocked out on his own with no fussiness for the first time in 5 days!

    • Babies can experience teething pain for months before a tooth erupts. If the baby’s dad was born with a tooth, it is very likely your almost 3 month old could be teething earlier than most. I’d ask her/his Dr just to be sure. Ear infections are common in teething, but it could also be an ear infection unrelated to teething. They both have very similar symptoms & signs. At 2 1/2 months, I’d go to the Dr just to make sure since that is a little early.

  39. My daughter is 5 months. She’s not acting herself at all. Fever and hasn’t really eaten all day I’m so concerned I know she’s teething but this is horrible

  40. sorry forgot to mention she is 19months

  41. my daughter is teething but lately she has become quiet.no fever..no loss of appetite..she is normally very actove n playful but has become a bit fussy quickly when she doesnt get her way and quiet during the day..can this mean anything other than teething?

    • Run it by your pediatrician but it sound normal to me 🙂

    • I’d ask a Dr since these are not typically symptoms of teething by themselves. It could be, but it could also be something else.

  42. My baby is 3 months and 5 days and when she started being fussy and like something was bothering her but at the same time acted like she was hungry 247 thats when i seen a lil white tooth looking behind her bottom gum

  43. My Nunu is 17 months hes having rash on his face and body also no appetite and having dirrhoea. Please help.

    • Hi shoni I think ur baby is teething no need to worry it will soon pass just sing and comfort her

    • Please run it by your pediatrician before you pass it on to teething! It could be something else and you don’t want to get into more trouble or land in the ER!

    • Since he has a rash on his whole body & face it could be an allergic reaction. My daughter when she was months old got a horrible blotchy rash all over her body & we found out she’s allergic to sulfate which is seriously in EVERYTHING. She’s now 9 years old & has for the most part grown out of this but it was hell because we could never find soaps without sulfate that were cheap. Please take her to her Dr just to make sure. If it is an allergic reaction, you don’t want to pass it off as teething & possibly have them go into shock.

  44. My baby is 7months plus and his lower incisor is out with a teeth, but he does not drool often and he eats well

    • Just like the article said, some baby’s tolerate teething very well & have no issues. Count yourself lucky! This may also change as different teeth in different parts of the gums start to come in. At any point he may experience discomfort so be prepared!

  45. i have been so worried with my son. It’s my first time anyway, it’s been 3 weeks since he has been very uneasy. He cried a lot at night and had been drooling so much. He tried to bit anything he touched (including my hands though). What do you think about this?

    • I think since it’s been 3 weeks, you need to take him to the Dr just to make sure something else isn’t going on. Comment sections are for mothers to share stories, not give medical advice. Please see their Dr. I have 3 kids & with all 3 they only experienced discomfort & fussiness for a week at the most. Then they’d go back to normal for a few weeks, then get fussy again. It was never constant.

  46. My 6 month old just started the sleeplessness tonight. I laid her in her crib at 7:30 like usual and she normally puts herself to sleep she started crying at 745 and fell asleep around 815. It’s now 9 pm and she just woke up again. She puts everything into her mouth and can soak an entire outfit in minutes. I feel a small rough spot on her bottom gum I’m assuming she’s teething. How long does the sleeplessness usually last?

    • It will usually last for a few days. Teeth erupt in pairs, so you may only feel 1 tooth, but it’s pair is close behind. She may experience this off and on for a few weeks as they erupt. Then you’ll have a break before the next pair erupt. Infant Tylenol or motrin as directed & some baby orajel can help her get some relief & you too since she won’t be in so much pain.

  47. Our 14 month old is currently cutting eye teeth and molars (yes, upper and lower). One day she grabbed a cold (organic!) carrot fresh out of the fridge from the bowl that I was carrying and happily gnawed on it. Of course we supervise, but she has been doing well with the cold carrot “teether.” Sorry that I’m commenting so long after the original post – just found the site (love it!!).

    • That’s a great way to sooth teething & get toddlers to eat their veggies! My oldest 2 are only 11 months apart so they’ve pretty much been treated like twins their whole lives (they’re 8&9 now) & when they were 1 &2 years old, my hubby & I would call cucumbers cookies & broccoli trees & give fun names to other veggies to get them to eat them. My daughter, the oldest, loves veggies but her brother hates them. He doesn’t even like cheese that’s melted & won’t eat anything with hot cheese. Even mac & cheese. I think they switched him at the hospital LOL.

  48. My baby is 3&half months old & his bottom both side tooth r coming up first is it normal?

    • My son is nearly 4 months and doing the same !!! Arggg both too

    • Abnormal. Take him to swaniji

    • My grandson had his first two bottom teeth at three months. The top two followed by 5 months. He is 8 1/2 months now and has 8 teeth, 4 top, 4 bottom! We think he is cutting his first molar now also! His doctor said it’s early, but not unusual! ?

  49. Thank you for the information. My daughter is almost 4 and a half months and has been acting completely different in the last week. She has been waking up during the night screaming and cannot be comforted for a long time. She won’t stop crying at night unless I rub her gums with a soother. She is chewing on everything that she can get her hands on (especially trying to eat mommy’s food). She is drooling more than usual, but not enough to soak through more than one bib a day. She is eating fairly normal still. The only thing that has me slightly worried is that her canines are coming in first. I can already see them through the gums. Has this happened to anyone else?

    • My daughter is 4 and half months and you just described her symptoms don’t to the T. I have two other children put it seems as though her teething experience is definitely different from theirs. If you find any solutions please let know because it just seems as though there is nothing that comfortshe her.

  50. This calms me down slightly. My son (5 months) has been crying non-stop for going on 3 days. He isn’t waking up at night, but his naps are a lot shorter and as soon as he wakes up, he’s screaming his little lungs off. I’ve been feeling his gums and haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary and his appetite hasnt changed either. He might be teething, but I’m still going to call his doctor in the morning.

  51. My baby is 10 months and she is not putting out any.

    • I was like that. My mom actually asked the pediatrician if there was a correlation between late teething and low IQ (he assured her that there wasn’t of course).

    • My children didn’t show any teeth until 1 so it’s fine. I have heard that the later they come in the stronger they will be but that is just hearsay. My children haven’t had any cavities yet tho and they aren’t the best brushers.

    • My baby is 7 month he has been drinking 10oz two jar baby food hardly he is getting his fisrt tooth and cough and runny nose I don’t know how much of this is normal

  52. My baby is 4 1/2 months he bites his fist and whatever he can put to his mouth. I’m a first time mom so I don’t know if he’s teething or he discovered a new thing.

  53. My son is 7 months old. He is starting to gnawl on everything, drooling, waking up through the night(wanting to eat), having trouble trying to get him to bed, taking less and shorter naps, and his bottom gum feels rough. Is he teething?

  54. My baby is 2 months and 10 days when we went in for her 2 month check up doctor said she might be teething I didn’t believe her turns out she was right:( my baby has all symptoms I hate to see her hurting. My other daughter didn’t get her first teeth until she was 4-5 months.

    • I have a few questions about your daughter and her teething signs. My daughter also is 2 months 3 days old and also has her 2 month check up today. I believe is showing signs of teething. Any information you could provide would be much appreciated as well ad very much needed! Thanks u! Britney

  55. Not to ruin the suspense for your next post, but we had no luck with those frozen teething remedies. Anbesol for moderate discomfort and then a dose of Ibuprofen added when all heck breaks loose.

    • Good to hear your experience. We’ve been holding down the fort with homeopathics but, alas, we’re just at the beginning of this teething journey.

  56. I’m not sure if it was the canines or the first molars, but those later rounds of teeth were much worse than the first teeth. Lot’s of crying, especially around meal time.

    • Ugg. Don’t tell me that! Our baby’s very first front teeth are agonizing (and sleep-disturbing) enough!

    • For my first two the canines were easy but the molars were by far the worst. It makes sense though, the molars are a lot bigger and a lot less pointy so it’s harder for them to get through.
