2023’s Top 10 Baby Name Changes

The Top 10 most popular boys’ and girls’ names mostly remained unchanged in 2023, though there is a new face you’ll love to meet. Hint: He’s a twist on a biblical favorite.

For boys, Liam continues to reign as the most popular male moniker, flanked by familiar friends Noah, Oliver, James, and Elijah, who maintained that exact order, holding steady from 2022. Our newbie on the list is Mateo at #6. A Spanish variant of Matthew, he ascended from #11 in 2022. Meaning “gift of God,” Mateo has gained ground for years, along with variant spelling, Matteo, who ranks at #144. The #7 slot goes to Theodore, a Greek great, up from #10 in 2022. Next is Henry, slipping a spot to #8, and then Lucas, cooling to #9. Rounding things out is William, who lost the most ground in the Top 10, easing from #6 to #10.

The Top 10 Girl names didn’t change much in 2023. Olivia retains her crown at #1, along with her beautiful buddies Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, and Sophia, who held their spots from 2022. The only rising name is Mia, with this short and sweet pick skipping up two slots to rest at #6, replacing Isabella, who slipped to #7. Ava also dipped a spot to #8, while the tail end remains the same, with Evelyn at #9 and the moon baby Luna at #10.

Who might we see in 2024’s Top 10? It’s anyone’s guess, especially for the boys. Over the past few years, we’ve seen some lone wolves making surprise appearances.

With boys, Levi is a big contender for making the Top 10 in 2024. As a Hebrew name with biblical ties, plus a fabulous meaning of “joined together,” he’s hard not to adore. We won’t count out Jack’s vintage appeal or Sebastian’sSebastian’s grandeur, either.

On the girls’ side, our sights are on Eleanor for 2024. Once deemed a grandma moniker, this treasure trove of nicknames has the wind in her sails. Violet may also start knocking on the Top 10 with this floral phenom prime for picking. Sofia is inching closer as well, so keep your eyes peeled!

2023’s Top 25 Baby Name Changes

The Top 25 Baby Names scrambled a bit last year, with a few names dropping out and others entering—including a handful for the first time ever!

Benjamin popped back in at #11 after falling out of the Top 10 Boy Names, while Levi and Sebastian held steady at #12 and #13, respectively. Jack inched a spot to land at #14, trailed by the handsome Ezra at #15. Meaning “help,” Ezra has ample cool factor with his inner Z styling, propelling him up from #26. Might he knock on the Top 10 door next?

The classic Michael maintained #16 as the last to hold his ground in the Top 25 Boy Names. Daniel dipped three places to #17, coincidentally tailed by the “lion” Leo at #18. That feline friend plodded forward four spots in 2023, a trend we see continuing in 2024. Hudson joined the Top 25 party to land at #21 with his New York charm and polished sound winners for parents. Another new face? Luca, with Lucas’ energetic cousin, snatching #24.

So, who might join 2024’s Top 25 Boy Names? Who will they replace?

Former Top 10 stars are declining, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Ethan or Alexander slip out of the Top 25. Several amazing monikers could replace them, but Luke seems the most poised to climb along with Miles. The latter rose 13 spots, remaining in a distant #43, though he has the strong meaning of “soldier” to help him march ahead.

As for girl names, the Top 25 glistens with rising stars. The stylish surname sweetheart Harper held onto #11. Sofia is close at her heels at #12, eager to join her twin, Sophia, after swapping spots with the Spanish stunner Camila. Eleanor galloped up the charts to #14, wowing with her grandma-chic vibes and endless nicknames. Other big movers are Violet and Hazel, as retro names continue to shine. Sassier, shorter picks are especially loved, like Lily at #20 and Nora at #25. Do you love longer names? Gianna and Aurora climbed higher, landing at #21 and #22.

Predicting 2024’s Top 25 for girls isn’t easy, but there are hints at who might not appear. The sing-songy Aria and Penelope may leave us, and quite a few names could join the ranks to fill their shoes. Our biggest bet is on Ivy. Both vintage and natural, she’s on trend in every way. The “island” girl, Isla, also has plenty of potential.

2023 Top 100 Baby Name Changes

Venturing past the Top 25 introduces recognizable options without the huge risks of your kiddo sharing a name with three or more classmates. In 2023, the sky was the limit in style, origin, meaning, and more, making it the perfect time to track down your next favorite. Ever-popular picks like Jacob and Hannah lost ground while a few modern darlings, including Maverick and Emery, made splashes.

For boys, the Top 100 welcomes five new faces for their first visits: Gael, Amir, Luka, Enzo, and Thiago. They rocketed up the ranks, aided by edgy sounds and epic meanings. The “prince” Amir is a natural star, and we’re not surprised to see Luka. His name family has been red-hot recently. Gael, Enzo, and Thiago all easily cross languages and borders, suiting future globetrotters or bilingual families.

The biggest movers of 2023’s Top 100 were boyish buddies like Beau and Theo and grandpa-chic greats like Elias. One we’d watch in 2024? Rowan. This tree-themed cutie has the nature vibe parents love and a pleasant sound. As for losing ground this year, Landon, Jordan, or Easton may drop out of the Top 100. Taking their spots to join the ranks? Perhaps Zion, Austin, or Myles. All three have ingredients of today’s trending names.

On the girls’ side, 2023 brought a few newbies to the Top 100 for the first time, including Lyla, Lainey, Eden, and Maeve. A variant of Leila, Lyl, has been closing in for a few years, but that last trio saw explosive growth. Country crooner Lainey Wilson undoubtedly helped Lainey while the biblical beauty of Eden finally pounced ahead. As for Maeve, this Irish babe has been “intoxicating” for parents, mirroring her meaning.

Other big movers include the melodic Eliana and the posh Adeline. Both are loaded with precious nickname options, too! Who might slip away from the Top 100 in 2024? Lydia, Natalia, and Hailey appear likely to lose steam. For their replacements, the sweet and sassy Millie seems more than ready to rock the Top 100, as do Lucia and Daisy.

Biggest Chart Climbers of 2023: Boys

Many male names rose in rankings last year, but some really took off on the charts. Whether aided by pop culture or spinning off modern naming trends, these picks showed up in a big way, hopping more than 200 spots!

Boy names with the most significant bounces in popularity in 2023 include:

  • Izael [+860]: Meaning “he who has wrestled God,” this form of Israel catapulted to #806 from #1666.
  • Chozen [+666]: An alternative spelling of the trending word name Chosen, this cutie cruised to #813.

  • Semaj [+339]: An American name that’s James spelled backward, he climbed to #902.

Kyaire [+291]: This modern American gentleman entered the top 1000 to kick back at #867.
  • Jahmir [+267]: He has the incredible meaning of “loyal and trustworthy,” which is perhaps part of why he’s now in the Top 1000 at #809.
  • Jesiah [+256]: Meaning “the Lord exists,” this Hebrew find sailed to rest at #865.

More big movers for boys to watch in 2024: Matheo, Mael, and Elio.

Biggest Chart Climbers of 2023: Girls

The Top 2023 Boy names certainly saw movers and shakers, but those were rookie numbers compared to the explosion of popularity experienced by some girl names. From alternative spellings to beauties from faraway lands, they easily scaled the charts.

These gorgeous girl names soared to new heights in 2023:

  • Kaeli [+1692]: A respelling of Kailee, this Gaelic gem means “slender” and breezed into the Top 1000 to land at #678.

  • Ivey [+437]: This twist of the plant princess Ivy grew into the Top 1000 to reach #851.
  • Ainara [+393]: A Spanish name meaning “bird,” she flew to #870.
  • Arely [+333]: A “golden” girl, she shined her brightest yet in 2023 and reached #837.
  • Scottie [+306]: Rising to #617, this country-themed cutie continues to wow.

Other noteworthy girl names on the rise include Avani, Aleyna, and Miley.

Biggest Losses in Popularity: Boys

Not every name can have a standout year. In fact, some names sank fast in the rankings.

These male monikers lost the most ground in 2023:

  • Dior [-384]: Luxury ties weren’t enough to save this French find as he plummeted to #1224.
  • Maxton [-273]: Cooling to #1237, this trendy Englishman couldn’t hold onto the Top 1000.
  • Davian [-206]: This modern twist on David lost traction, dipping to #1174.
  • Heath [-196]: This Hollywood heartthrob couldn’t hold onto his Top 1000 star, falling to #1059.
  • Braden [-186]: The -aiden trend continues to lose steam, with this Irish member tumbling to #1121.
  • Niklaus [-185]: A Slavic form of Nicholas, he tumbled to #1146.
  • Bryant [-178]: This surname with sports ties dipped in popularity to #1091.
  • Dion [-168]: Falling to #1073, this short form of the Greek Dionysius failed to make the Top 1000.
  • Kase [-165]: Meaning “box,” this one-syllable wonder went down to #1030.
  • Lux [-164]: Despite his bright meaning of “light,” this Latin legend flickered from the Top 1000 to #1151.

Biggest Losses in Popularity: Girls

Some girl names fell out of favor in a big way. It was a mixed bag across the board, from trendy modern monikers to ancient marvels.

These girl names saw the most considerable losses in ranking in 2023:

  • Addilynn [-374]: Somersaulting down to #1315, this respelling of Adeline lost the most spots in girl names.
  • India [-299]: While place name perfection, she sank to #1272.
  • Madisyn [-257]: The Top 1000 is no more for this alternative spelling of Madison, as she landed at #1063.
  • Chanel [-227]: Parents weren’t wowed as much by brand names like this beauty, who parachuted to #1171.
  • Averi [-221]: This form of Avery slowed on the charts, slipping to #1124.
  • Itzayana [-214]: As magnificent as this Mayan moniker may be, she dropped to #1069.
  • Jayda [-213]: The Top 1000 is no more for this form of Jada, who landed at #1036.
  • Marleigh [-213]: This respelling of Marley didn’t have as many parents under her spell, resting at #924.
  • Jada [-198]: As precious as this jade-inspired name is, she still descended to #1035.
  • Jayleen [-178]: While pleasing on the ear, this beautiful name dipped to #788.

2023 Name Trends to Watch for in 2024

Some naming themes left their mark in 2023, and it’s safe to say they’ll continue into 2024, especially those that have blossomed for a few years now.

First up: Obscure Vintage

Old-school baby names are nothing new on the charts (ask Theodore and Amelia,) but if you study 2023’s list of rising names, you’ll spot heaps of undercover oldies making a resurgence.

Lionel and Douglas caught on with the boys, along with the biblical Enoch and Abner. They have the same appeal as Oliver and Henry without the mega popularity. If all things vintage rock your world, standouts nailing the trend are Harry, Alvin, and Franklin.

For girls, the retro theme took us back to the 1940s era with Elaine and Barbara. We also visited the time of flower power with the 1960s staples Lisa and Paula. Throwback picks are plentiful, but selecting an under-the-radar find fits in without being too common in the classroom later in life. A few of our obscure vintage favorites are Daphne, Sally, and Edith.

Next: Surname Surge

Today’s parents love surname names, from Jackson to Harper and everything in between. Don’t believe us? See Madison, Avery, and Riley for girls and Carter, Lincoln, and Brooks for boys.

2023 was the same, with several trending picks under the surname umbrella. On the boys’ side, Rhodes is creeping higher, along with Sutton and Colter. For girls, the surname stunners lean into unisex territory, like Murphy and Miller.

Lastly: Mighty Meanings

Words have power, echoed by many of 2023’s most popular baby names.

Literal words are rising in popularity, such as Chosen and True for boys and Blessing and Navy for girls, but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll see even more strength behind the surface of many names. A shining example is the rising Adriel, a Hebrew name meaning “of God’s flock.” Another is the “guardian” Samara and the “heavenly maiden” Celeste.

Loving the specialness of extraordinary hidden meanings? Check out more of our favorites in Nehemiah, Viviana, and Osiris.

This post is part of our ongoing comparison of the best birthing classes. All prices noted below are accurate as of 2024.

The Bradley Method is the original “partner-led” in-person, group childbirth class geared toward natural birth. This class option is both highly popular and highly effective for those seeking a natural birth! This effectiveness is due mainly to the intensive time commitment parents put into their class experience.

The Bradley Method consists of 12 weekly 2-hour classes, totaling 24 hours, at an average cost of $400. Cost varies by location, and prices are set by individual instructors. Classes are pre-scheduled in a 12-week class series, and parents can find an instructor using the “Find A Teacher” tab on The Bradley Method website.

This brings up a couple of main differences between The Mama Natural Birth Course and The Bradley Method.

  1. The Mama Natural course offers an in-home, self-paced option that you can complete on your own schedule–no need to find and connect with an instructor or fit specific class times into your schedule! No hidden or surprise costs, no lengthy time commitment.
  2. The Mama Natural course can provide the same results in less time. The Bradley Method uses repetition as a reinforcement method throughout the lengthy class time. While this repetition may be helpful for some, others may find it very long and drawn out. Host Genevieve designed this course to be focused and to-the-point, which keeps the total class time under 10 hours!

The Bradley Method covers topics such as the labor process, coping with pain naturally, prenatal exercises, and possible interventions using a 130-page course book in a small-group setting; most classes have a limited space. Positioning and comfort measures are integrated into a portion of each class session. Mama Natural also covers these topics, plus, they offer printable worksheets, a standalone prenatal workout video, special segments just for dads, plus valuable and inspirational physical bonuses sent to US-based students in the mail, without the required reading of a lengthy course book.

Like Mama Natural, The Bradley Method focuses on how to achieve a natural birth, focusing on the role of the birth partner as the primary way to accomplish this. The Mama Natural course also gears material to prepare the birth partner well, while allowing the integration of other support people, or NO support people, if that’s what you so choose!

The Mama Natural Birth Course features a well-paced, relatable approach, and aims to provide the best learning experience, delivered in a fun, fresh way.

While both are great courses, there are some key differences to note, mainly:

Instructors

The Mama Natural Birth Course is taught by doula, bestselling author and YouTube star Genevieve Howland, as well as Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Maura Winkler.

Not only is host Maura Winkler a midwife, she’s also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Her professional and medical background provide invaluable expertise to the Mama Natural Birth Course.

The Bradley Method group classes are taught by instructors with the credential of “AAHCC,” meaning that they have attended a workshop and completed instructor course study through the American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth, the certification organization behind The Bradley Method. Instructors must also have had a natural birth themselves, they must have attended a Bradley Method class series, and many instructors teach as a husband-wife team.

Course Access

The Mama Natural Birth Course allows for 1 full year of access. With an ample access window, the Mama Natural Birth Course allows students to watch and re-watch various class sections. This is extra important when it comes to the breastfeeding classes that both courses offer.

The Bradley Method classes are over once they are over! While you may have some one-on-one access to your instructor after birth, the course workbook and materials from classes are your main takeaways for future reference.

Extras

The Mama Natural Birth Course provides all students with a Natural Birth Playbook for free, plus physical copies of Genevieve’s Natural Pregnancy Affirmation Cards and a handmade bracelet from their charity partner in Haiti. The Mama Natural Birth Course also donates 10% of profits to organizations that support maternal and newborn health.

Students also have 1-year access to the Mama Natural Pregnancy Group on Facebook, which provides a virtual community of like-minded mamas that can be accessed for support, questions, or concerns at any time day or night.

The Bradley Method provides students with a 130-page course workbook, and access to the Student Resource Center on the website with current registration in a class. The Student Resource Center provides additional information for each weekly class session. Many class groups become quite close throughout the 12-week cycle, which fosters a sense of community long after class ends. Some groups even host a reunion class after all class members give birth, so that everyone can meet the babies and hear each other’s birth stories!

Value

The Mama Natural Birth Course was the first online birthing class to lower prices in response to the greater need for virtual classes during the Coronavirus pandemic. The discounted admission price along with the physical bonuses offer students a very solid value for their money.

With varied pricing by location, average pricing for The Bradley Method is right in line with the industry standards for in-person, group classes. In fact, when broken down by hours spent in class, The Bradley Method is a better value than most other independent in-person, group classes!

Closing Thoughts

Both The Mama Natural Birth Course and The Bradley Method provide solid information and content for couples seeking a natural birth!

The Mama Natural Birth Course is instructed by a Certified Nurse Midwife and packs in a ton of succinct and useful information in only 10 hours, including free printable worksheets, prenatal workouts, and physical bonuses mailed to students in the USA.

Thousands of birthing families have benefitted from what they have learned through The Mama Natural Birth Course. The course is designed for mamas just like you who are seeking to walk into their childbirth as confident, empowered, and educated as they can be!

Regardless of which birthing class you end up choosing, we hope that you find the best one for you, and that you have your best, most natural birth.

Based on available research, about 85% of couples will become pregnant within about one year of having regular, unprotected sex. On the other hand, this means that at least 15% will require more patience and potentially require help from medical professionals in order to treat infertility.

There’s no denying that age is a factor in determining and boosting your fertility. Unfortunately, fertility naturally declines as couples get older, especially for women in their upper 30s and 40s. It’s generally advised that couples seek the help of a fertility specialist if they have not become pregnant after a year of trying (or after six months if the woman is over the age of 35).

How Can I Increase My Chances of Getting Pregnant? First, Work on Timing Sex Properly

If you and your partner are hoping to have a bun in the oven soon, timing is everything!

Simply put, regular, timed intercourse is the best way to get pregnant. This makes sense—considering that even if both partners are very fertile, sex needs to happen at the right time for conception to occur! In fact, there are only about six days at most each month (and really, only about four that are likely) where a woman is fertile and conception can occur.

Having sex during the “fertile window” is the number one way to increase your chances of getting pregnant. This doesn’t mean turning lovemaking into a robotic task—as we want to keep the romance alive. However, if you’re a woman, it does mean learning about your menstrual cycle and pinpointing when you’re ovulating.

Here’s what you need to know about timing intercourse to get pregnant:

Understand Your Fertility Window:

The most fertile time within a woman’s menstrual cycle is usually the day of ovulation and the three to four days leading up to it. Learning natural methods to identify these peak fertility days, such as tracking basal body temperature or looking for cervical mucus changes, is very helpful while TTC.

Ovulation occurs at a different time for each woman and can change from month to month, however, the average range for ovulation is between days 14 and 18 of the menstrual cycle (that said, it could be as early or late as day 10 or 22). Keep a menstrual diary or use an app to become more in tune with your own unique cycle. Considering all that your cycle can reveal, you won’t regret it!

Have Sex When You’re Ovulating:

The best way to successfully become pregnant is to have sex before and during ovulation, which is like casting a wide net to catch the big fish. Sperm can live in a woman’s body for as long as five days after sex, while an egg can survive for about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. Knowing these stats, you want to be sure to have sex before ovulation and on the exact day of ovulation.

You can try using ovulation prediction kits for precise monitoring of your fertile window or keep a digital or written record of your menstrual cycle patterns.

Keep in mind that if you take your basal body temp each morning, an increase in your temp will reveal that you’ve already ovulated in the 24 hours prior, which likely means it’s too late to become pregnant that cycle. Your aim is to have sex before and during ovulation for the best results, which means you need to predict ovulation.

Boost the Frequency of Intercourse:

Organizations, including The American Pregnancy Association, recommend having sex every other day around the time of ovulation to increase the chances of conception. This strategy ensures a steady supply of sperm for the awaiting egg, but it also takes into account the fact that more sex than this might become exhausting and stressful.

Choose Sperm-Friendly Lubricants:

Some lubricants can hinder sperm motility, so it’s best to avoid these types of lubricants and choose those that are specifically designed to be sperm-friendly instead. Read product descriptions when purchasing lubricants and look for those that mention being “fertility-friendly or “sperm friendly.” Be sure to choose natural and gentle lubes, which are free of parabens and fragrances to avoid irritation.

Stay Put Post-Sex:

While there’s no definitive “best position” for conception, gravity can be your ally. Lying down for about 15 minutes after sex can help keep the sperm headed in the right direction and keep sperm closer to the egg. Some women take this a step further and lay down with their legs elevated to allow gravity to help out, although it’s not entirely known if this makes a big difference.

Tips for Trying to Conceive for Men, Women, and Couples

TTC Tips for Women:

  • Understand Your Menstrual Cycle: When it comes to boosting your fertility, knowledge is power in the TTC game! Your menstrual cycle is like a window into your reproductive health, as well as your general well-being. Understanding your cycle helps you pinpoint when you’re most fertile, particularly when you’re ovulating, so you know when to have sex in order to get pregnant; plus cycle tracking can clue you in on whether you might have an issue such as PCOS or lack of ovulation. Bottom line: knowing your body’s own patterns is absolutely key when TTC!
  • Track Ovulation: Ovulation is when an egg is released from an ovary, which needs to happen in order for you to conceive. In other words, the ovulation phase (which only lasts for a few days each cycle) is prime time for conception. There are several ways to track ovulation, from calendar charting to using ovulation predictor kits. Whichever method you use, it’s essential for determining the best dates for the sperm and egg to meet.
  • Strike a Balance With Your Weight: Being underweight or overweight can both negatively affect your chances of getting pregnant. Aim for a healthy BMI of about 19 to 24 to keep your fertility in check. This might require gaining or losing some weight depending on your starting weight and lifestyle.
  • A Prenatal Vitamin and Folic Acid Are Your Friends: Start taking a prenatal vitamin, one that includes folate, which is crucial for preventing congenital disabilities and supportive of your overall health. Aim for at least 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) of folate (which is preferable over folic acid) each day while TTC and for at least the first three months of pregnancy. Get into the habit of doing this now, and you’ll be one step ahead when you become pregnant.

TTC Tips for Men:

  • Keep It Cool Down There: Sperm aren’t fans of heat, considering that lots of heat can potentially disrupt male fertility factors, including sperm count and quality. Men should avoid hot baths and tight clothing and be careful about putting too much pressure or heat on their groin area (such as from cycling or other types of exercises).
  • Consider Supplements: Certain supplements can help naturally boost fertility by supporting sperm health. For men, zinc and selenium supplements are great for this purpose.
  • Know Your Health Status: While many women in their “reproductive years” visit their healthcare providers for annual checkups related to their fertility or periods, men often don’t. This means that if a man does have an underlying fertility issue, he likely won’t be aware of it until it’s game time. Men should consider getting a preconception checkup, which can include a sperm analysis to help identify any underlying health issues that could affect their chances of conceiving.

Healthy TTC Habits for Both Partners

When TTC, both partners should focus on a healthy lifestyle—yes, including the males! This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and cutting down on caffeine and alcohol. Think of these lifestyle changes as prepping both partners’ bodies and minds for what’s to come (pregnancy and parenthood), which requires a lot of energy.

Here are more details on what both partners can do when TTC in order to tip the odds in their favor:

  • Eat a Nutrient-Dense, Balanced Diet: Fertility experts emphasize the significance of a balanced diet that’s rich in healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. This approach includes a focus on iron, calcium, folate, and other essential nutrients, especially from a variety of plant foods, which both men and women need when TTC and working on improving their reproductive health.
  • Get a Handle on Stress: Stress can be a buzzkill for fertility, considering it messes with sex hormones, can disrupt women’s menstrual cycles, and often decreases libido. To keep stress in check, engage in relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or whatever chills you out. Think of stress-busting habits like creating a zen garden for your reproductive system.
  • Check on Your Medications: Some medications, such as testosterone or hormone replacement treatments, anabolic steroids, narcotic painkillers, and SSRIs, can potentially negatively affect fertility. Therefore, if you take any meds regularly, chat with your doctor about potential side effects they may cause and alternatives to take instead.
  • Avoiding Smoking and Other Harmful Substances: Parents-to-be should definitely avoid smoking, using illicit drugs, and consuming excessive alcohol, as they can significantly impact fertility. Limit your caffeine intake to about a cup a day if possible and decrease alcohol to about one drink per day tops. Overall, treat your body like you’re already pregnant or like a new parent (who needs lots of rest, water, and healthy food!).
  • Manage Underlying Health Conditions: Stay on top of your health with regular check-ups. Suppose a couple is dealing with existing conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease. In that case, these should be addressed right away to avoid complications with fertility or pregnancy. To prevent delays when TTC, men and women seek help from a fertility specialist early on in their journeys if they have any known issues that could potentially be serious, including signs of menstrual irregularities, heavy periods, or testicular issues.
  • Limit Exposure to Toxins: Environmental toxins such as pesticides, lead, heavy metals, and other “endocrine disruptors” found in things like household products and cosmetics can interfere with hormone production and reproductive health. You can take steps to reduce your exposure to these environmental toxins by eating mostly organic foods, upgrading your cookware to those made with safe materials, drinking filtered water, and choosing natural personal and household products that are free of suspicious chemicals.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential for healthy circulation, cervical fluid production, and sperm production, so drink up!
  • Regular Physical Activity: Getting enough exercise benefits both men and women in numerous ways, including when trying to conceive, such as by keeping inflammation under control and supporting blood flow. Exercise can improve overall health, which in turn can enhance fertility, however, it’s important to note that too much intense exercise can have the opposite effect, especially in women. When TTC, moderate, regular exercise is best, such as yoga, walking, cycling, and swimming.

How Else Can a Couple Support Each Other When Trying to Conceive?

TTC can be an emotional rollercoaster, especially if this phase lasts longer than a couple would like. Because emotional and mental stress can make the process even harder and more complicated, it’s key to be each other’s cheerleaders.

  • Keep the Spark Alive: Don’t let sex become a chore. Keep the romance and spontaneity alive, such as by planning fun dates, taking day trips together, or doing other activities that keep your bond strong and your outlook positive.
  • Educate Yourself: The more you know about fertility and conception, the better prepared you’ll be for whatever comes your way. Read up on any health issues you’re dealing with, seek help from a reputable specialist, and talk to others who have gone through the TTC process and come out on the other side.
  • Stay Positive: An optimistic and hopeful mindset can work wonders for keeping you calm and avoiding too much stress. Remember, it’s about the journey as much as the destination. Focus on all the positive things going on in your lives right now even while you’re TTC, which may wind up being the same things you miss once you become parents!

Wrapping It Up

Remember, every couple’s path to conception is unique. While these tips can increase your chances of becoming pregnant quickly, knowledge, patience, and persistence are often your best allies. And if things aren’t happening as quickly as you’d hoped, don’t hesitate to seek advice from a fertility specialist. Here’s to making your baby dreams come true! 🍼👶✨

Infertility isn’t just a clinical term; it’s a journey filled with hopes, doubts, and a quest for answers. Whether you’ve been TTC (trying to conceive) for several months or even for years, you’re likely looking for answers to the nagging question, Why am I not getting pregnant?

Struggling to start a family can feel like being stuck in a maze with no exit in sight. But we’re here to help you understand common causes of infertility, risk factors for struggling to conceive, as well as signs that your journey to having a baby may be a longer one than you anticipated.

Infertility might feel like a lonely road, but it’s more common than you think. Roughly 15 percent of couples in the United States have trouble conceiving (or about one in every six or seven couples). With the right guidance, support, and sometimes medical intervention, many infertile couples find their way to parenthood.

No matter what’s delaying you getting pregnant, there’s light at the end of the tunnel in the form of various infertility treatment options, including natural ones such as changes in diet and exercise habits. Let’s dive in to uncover the underlying reasons that both women and men may deal with infertility.

What Exactly Is Infertility?

Picture this: A couple decides it’s time to have a baby. They try for a year, expecting to experience the excitement of having a positive pregnancy test within several months, but nothing happens.

This scenario, my friends, is what doctors typically label as “infertility.”

Infertility is defined as “not being able to get pregnant (conceive) after one year (or longer) of unprotected sex,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you’re over 35, the timeline to being diagnosed with infertility shortens to six months.

In other words, if you’ve been having unprotected sex for between six months to one year without successfully becoming pregnant, for one reason or another, you’re dealing with infertility. About 85 percent of couples will conceive naturally within one year of having unprotected sex; however 15 pecent won’t, due to infertility causes such as lack of ovulation, low sperm count, PCOS, and other relatively common conditions.

Most Common Causes of Infertility

When it comes to the culprits behind infertility, we sometimes forget that with each couple, the journey to becoming parents is a story with two main characters. Infertility affects both females and males, although female infertility often gets more attention.

In fact, it’s estimated that when a couple can’t become pregnant, 50 percent of the time there’s a male infertility issue at play. Among 20 percent of couples who are having trouble getting pregnant, male infertility is the primary cause, while it’s a contributing factor in another 30 percent to 40 percent of all infertility cases.

Causes of Female Infertility:

Because conception and pregnancy are such complex processes—involving various hormones, glands, and systems in the body—there are many potential reasons why a couple might struggle with infertility. Of course, the timing of unprotected sex also plays a big role in whether or not a couple will conceive!

When it comes to female infertility in particular, a large study done by the World Health Organization found that the most common identifiable factors of female infertility are:

  • Ovulatory disorders: 25% of cases (many of which are tied to PCOS)
  • Endometriosis: 5%
  • Pelvic adhesions: 12%
  • Tubal blockage: 11%
  • Other tubal/uterine abnormalities: 11%

Here’s more about some of the common causes of infertility affecting females:

  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles: If your monthly cycle and periods seem like an unpredictable rollercoaster, this can definitely affect your chances of getting pregnant. Irregular cycles can come in the form of absent or late ovulation, short or long cycles, very heavy periods that indicate an underlying health issue, or absent periods altogether. It’s generally easier to become pregnant when your cycle is regular and predictable, this way, you know when you’re ovulating so you can time sex to boost your chances of conceiving.
  • Hormonal Havoc: Hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, are like the body’s messengers, but sometimes they don’t deliver the messages correctly. Issues with hormone levels (including thyroid hormones) can disrupt ovulation and make cycles irregular, causing it to be tough to predict the best time for baby-making. Think of abnormal hormone levels, whether too high or too low, like trying to catch a train when the timetable is always changing.
  • Uterine Fibroids: Fibroids are like unwanted guests that reside in the womb, potentially disrupting a cozy environment for a baby. They’re made up of tissue that grows in the wrong place, and they’re not always noticeable or painful, although they can cause discomfort and heavy periods in some cases. Because fibroids can affect hormone levels, they can make it harder to get and remain pregnant.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): It’s estimated that 70 percent of women with anovulation (no ovulation) have PCOS. Picture your ovaries deciding to throw an unwelcome party, complete with multiple cysts (small, fluid-filled sacs which are one criterion for PCOS). These uninvited guests can disrupt the regular ovulation process, making the menstrual cycle unpredictable and in some cases, leading to ovulation being totally absent. PCOS often marches in with a band of symptoms like irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne, and sometimes difficulties with weight management. It’s a common but manageable condition, often playing a sneaky role in fertility challenges.
  • Endometriosis: Endometriosis is when tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus starts growing outside of it. It’s an uncomfortable condition to deal with, and in addition to causing pain and heavy periods, it can lead to various symptoms affecting the reproductive system and fertility.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Often stemming from infections like chlamydia or gonorrhea, PID can lead to scarring and blockages in the reproductive system. It’s like having roadblocks on the path where the egg and sperm need to travel and meet. PID has been found to be more common among people with poor access to healthcare, which can explain why it can stem from untreated infections.
  • Fallopian Tube Troubles: These tubes are where eggs travel to meet sperm, so if there’s a blockage, such as due to scarring, the egg and sperm simply can’t meet.
  • Early Menopause: Sometimes, the ovaries decide to retire early, and when they clock out, so does fertility. Unfortunately, this can start occurring in some women’s late 30s, and without treatment, it can disrupt fertility indefinitely.
  • Certain Medical Treatments and Conditions: Treatments like chemotherapy or Cystic Fibrosis (an autoimmune disease) can interfere with fertility because they affect the body’s natural processes, including menstruation and ovulation.

Causes of Male Infertility:

Now that you know the reasons that some women deal with infertility let’s explore how men play a role in fertility struggles:

  • Sperm Count Concerns: The number of healthy “swimmers” that a man produces has a big impact on whether or not a couple can conceive. Sperm production is a complex process, and if anything goes awry, it’s like a factory shutdown. Men can have low sperm counts for various reasons, such as an unhealthy lifestyle, toxin exposure (including smoking), or a varicocele, which is an abnormal vein in the testicles that disrupts sperm’s ability to survive.
  • Varicocele: Never heard of a varicocele? It’s surprisingly common. It’s a swelling of the veins that drain the testicles, which puts a stop in the sperm’s journey. The good news is that it’s the most common reversible cause of male infertility (varicoceles can be corrected with surgery).
  • Sperm Duct Issues (Including Infections): Infections can interfere with sperm production or sperm health or can cause scarring that blocks the passage of sperm. Similar to fallopian tube issues in women, infections in the tubes in the testicles are like having a roadblock on the sperm highway. If the ducts that carry sperm are damaged or blocked, sperm can’t make it out during ejaculation.
  • Ejaculation Issues: Various conditions can prevent the proper release of sperm, including certain genetic diseases like Cystic Fibrosis or autoimmune disorders. The immune system can mistakenly consider sperm as harmful invaders and try to eliminate them, resulting in low sperm count.
  • Tumors: Cancers and nonmalignant tumors can affect the male reproductive organs directly through glands that release hormones related to reproduction, like the thyroid or pituitary gland, or through unknown causes.
  • Hormone Imbalances: Disorders of the testicles, pituitary gland, and thyroid can cause hormone imbalances, such as low testosterone, that affect fertility. For example, low T can contribute to issues such as erectile dysfunction.
  • Lifestyle and Environmental Factors: Overexposure to certain environmental elements like heat, toxins, and chemicals can affect sperm production or function. Even things like heavy drinking, smoking, and drug use can take a toll. It’s like living in a house where the environment is constantly messing with the thermostat and air quality.

Risk Factors for Infertility

Among both men and women, certain factors can raise the risk of infertility, including those related to age, lifestyle habits, weight, diet, and health history. Unfortunately, age is a big one for both males and females—considering fertility isn’t timeless in either sex.

Lifestyle choices like smoking or heavy drinking are like putting roadblocks on your fertility journey. And let’s not forget weight—both extremes, under or overweight, can decrease the chances of becoming pregnant since body weight affects hormone levels.

Here’s more about risk factors for infertility in both sexes:

  • Age: Just like fine wine, we get better with age, but unfortunately, our fertility does not. The biological clock is real, and it ticks even louder as we age, especially once we reach our 40s and beyond. For example, among women aged 35 to 39 years old, infertility rates are as high as 25 percent, while about 30 percent of women between 40 and 44 experience infertility. Men’s fertility also starts to decline around age 40 to 45 years, due to changes in testosterone and sperm count.
  • Weight: Being over or underweight can affect hormone production, thus affecting fertility. Healthy fertility is usually about finding that sweet spot in the middle.
  • Stress: High stress can interfere with the HPA axis and therefore, the production of certain hormones needed to produce sperm in men and to ovulate in women. Stress messes with just about every bodily system, and our body’s natural fertility rhythms are no exception.
  • Poor Diet: A lousy diet is equivalent to trying to run a car without the right kind of fuel. A diet lacking in essential nutrients, such as healthy fats and fiber, can negatively affect fertility. For instance, research suggests that a diet based on the Mediterranean diet, such as one high in omega-3 fatty acids, plant-based protein, and vitamins and minerals, has a positive impact on fertility.
  • Exercise Extremes: Too much or too little exercise can throw your hormones off balance. It’s all about moderation – not too much, not too little.

Spotting Symptoms and Signs of Infertility: When Should You Be Concerned?

What are the signs that you can’t get pregnant? The most glaring sign of infertility is the absence of a positive pregnancy test despite regular, unprotected romps in the bedroom for six or more months.

For women, if your menstrual cycle is unpredictable or your periods are missing completely, that could be a major clue. Men, on the other hand, might notice some hormonal changes – maybe less facial hair or problems in the bedroom department.

These signs and symptoms can indicate that a couple might be dealing with infertility:

  • Inconsistencies in cycle length, heavy or light periods, or complete absence of periods.
  • Experiencing severe pain and very heavy bleeding during menstruation.
  • Experiencing two or more consecutive miscarriages.
  • Difficulty with erection, ejaculation, or a decrease in sexual desire, which can be linked to hormonal issues among males.
  • Swelling or pain in the testicles, which can be signs of varicocele or other issues that might impact sperm production.
  • Facial hair growth in women, or changes in voice and reduced muscle mass in men (signs of hormone imbalances).

Treating Infertility: Where to Start

Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t worry because there’s a whole toolbox of infertility treatments available, which are always determined based on the underlying causes of a couple’s struggles. And if you’re feeling like you’re the only couple you know struggling to have a baby, know that about 1 in 8 women aged 15 to 49 years receive infertility services before successfully conceiving.

Treatments for infertility range from medications that assist with hormone levels and ovulation to more advanced techniques, such as surgery to remove scar tissue and fibroids or IVF. And for those scratching their heads over ‘unexplained infertility,’ there’s still hope with tailored treatment approaches.

How can you boost your fertility naturally? Tackling infertility requires a careful balance of lifestyle, diet, and exercise changes, and sometimes, medical management is still needed in addition to natural treatments to address underlying conditions. With modern medicine and holistic approaches, many fertility issues can be successfully overcome.

Key Takeaways on Causes of Infertility

Understanding the causes of infertility—whether hormone-related, diet or bodyweight-related or due to issues like PCOS or endometriosis—is like putting together a complex puzzle. Addressing each piece, whether it’s a medical condition, lifestyle factor, or environmental influence, plays a crucial role in overcoming infertility. For many couples, the road to parenthood is somewhat bumpy to navigate. However, a significant number of fertility issues are treatable, so there’s always a glimmer of hope.

If you haven’t added a comb to your hospital bag, you may want to add one — and it’s not for your hair! More and more mamas are adding “birthing combs” to their hospital bags for pain management… but I know what you’re thinking, mama! What’s a birthing comb and why do you need one?

We’ll also all of your questions here:

  • What is a birthing comb?
  • How do birthing combs work?
  • What kind of birthing comb do you need?

What Is a Birthing Comb?

A birthing comb is a regular ol’ hair comb. What makes it a “birthing comb” is how you use it. Any comb with teeth (not a brush) will work. Some mamas like the feel of a smooth plastic comb, while others like the natural feel of a wooden comb.

When you hold a comb, keep the teeth pointing just below where your fingers meet your palm. When you feel a contraction coming, close your fist around the comb and let the teeth press into your palm. Use as much or as little pressure — whatever feels the best to you.

While this won’t take away your contractions, it does give you something to focus on — a distraction.

Why Do Birthing Combs Work?

There are a few reasons why birthing combs work:

1. Distraction

The first reason is that it’s simply a distraction. Studies show that distractions can help ease both pain and mental stress during labor. While distraction methods didn’t have any clinically significant impact on length of labor, it did dramatically reduce “perceived stress during labor” and that’s something to celebrate!

2. Acupressure

Birthing combs can also help manage pain because the teeth hit an acupressure point on your hand.

Watch this video to see how to locate your hand pressure points:

3. Gate control theory

The third explanation for why birthing combs work so well is because of “gate control theory of pain.” According to this theory, your mind can only process so many physical sensations at once. The “gate” refers to your nervous system that either allows pain signals into your brain or denies pain messages into your brain. Obviously, we are trying to close the gate to those painful labor contractions!

The idea is that if you’re experiencing painful sensations, then non-painful stimulation can help “close” the pain gate. In this case, the contractions are your painful sensations, and the comb is a non-painful stimulation that helps close the gate, so your brain focuses on the comb rather than the contractions.

In other words… by using a birthing comb, the comb forces your mind to feel something other than just contractions.

Can You Use a Birthing Comb for Labor?

Yes! Birthing combs can be easily incorporated into any birthing plan. Whether you’re at home, in a birthing suite, or in a hospital setting, combs are easy to use.

Fun fact: some mamas may even use birthing combs in other situations to help mitigate pain naturally! One mama shared this story:

“I used a birthing comb during my first few breastfeeding sessions when I was dealing with chapped nipples and bleeding blisters. The comb gave me something else to think about!”

How Can I Ease Labor Pains Naturally?

Holding a birthing comb is just one of many tools you can try during labor. What works for one mama may not work for you, and what works for you at one minute may not work later! That’s why I recommend having an arsenal of natural pain management tools and strategies at the ready. This includes:

  • Hypnobirthing strategies

The post Labor Transition: What It Is & How to Prepare For It appeared first on Mama Natural.

]]>
Transition is the final and most intense part of the first stage labor, marking the transition (hence the name) from active labor to the pushing stage. It’s a critical phase of labor but it also means that baby’s arrival is imminent. Yay!

Many mamas prepare for labor by learning as much as they can about each stage of labor — and how to mentally and physically prepare for it — so it’s important to know what to expect during transition, how to manage it, and what comes after it.

Read on as we answer all of your questions about transition in labor.

What are the signs of transition in labor?

The signs of transition vary from mama to mama, but there are some common indicators to look out for. One of the most noticeable signs of transition is the intensity and frequency of contractions.

During this stage, contractions become much stronger, longer, and closer together, with some women experiencing them every two to three minutes. Additionally, your body produces adrenaline to help power you through this stage, so you may feel sweaty, start to feel an urge to push, feel nauseous, and even vomit. Some mamas shake visibly. These are all normal reactions to an increase in adrenaline.

What to do during transition?

The intensity of transition can be overwhelming, but there are various ways to cope with it. One of the most important things you can do is to focus on remaining calm, centered, and grounded. One way to do this is to practice breathing exercises to help you relax and manage the pain. Studies show that deep breathing doesn’t just calm you down: it also helps alleviate acute pain!

Transition is also a good time to focus on your positive birth affirmations. Additionally, having a supportive partner, birth team, and/or doula can help to provide comfort and encouragement. Other comfort measures such as taking a warm shower, using a birthing ball, or changing positions can also help to alleviate discomfort.

How long does it last?

Although transition is intense, there is good news: transition is the shortest stage of labor. It lasts an average of 30 minutes to two hours. However, the duration can vary from woman to woman, and some may experience a much shorter or longer transition period. Remember, your journey to motherhood is unique!

Where does transition fit into the stages of labor?

<<an infographic might be helpful here >>

Labor is divided into three stages:

  • Stage 1: The longest stage that includes early labor, active labor, and transition
  • Stage 2: Pushing and birth of your baby
  • Stage 3: Delivery of the placenta

Transition falls into the first stage of labor, and it’s the final stage of labor before moving into the pushing stage.

What do transition contractions feel like?

Transition contractions are the most intense contractions you will experience during labor. They are stronger, longer, and closer together, often lasting between 60 and 90 seconds. During this stage, some women may experience back pain and cramping, and the contractions may feel like they are coming one after the other, with little or no break in between.

Guided imagery and visualization are particularly helpful here. Many mamas visualize how each contraction widens their cervix and brings them closer and closer to meeting their little one.

How dilated are you during transition?

During transition, the cervix dilates from around eight centimeters to the full 10 centimeters. That’s about the width of a bagel! This also means that your baby’s head has moved through the cervix and into the birth canal, and delivery is oh-so-close.

What comes after transition?

After transition, the pushing stage begins, where you will actively push to deliver the baby. After the intensity of transition, many mamas say that pushing feels good. This stage can last from a few minutes to several hours, depending on each mama’s unique progress and her baby’s position. Once your baby is delivered, the placenta will be delivered shortly after, marking the official end of labor. Congrats!

The takeaways

Transition is a challenging, but it marks the imminent arrival of your baby. Knowing what to expect during this stage, such as the signs, how to manage it, and what comes after it, can help you prepare mentally and physically for the birth. Remember to stay focused, stay calm, and trust in your body’s ability to deliver your baby.

What are your go-to practices for making it through transition? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

We all know the importance of brushing our teeth twice a day. But what about when it comes to our kids? Like millions of mothers before you, you might be wondering when you should start an oral care routine with your kids.

If their baby teeth are going to fall out one day, is there a need to brush them every day? The short answer? YES. Oral decay – cavities – is one of the most common illnesses in children, and poor oral health affects the entire body, not just the teeth.

So, when is the right time to start brushing your kids’ teeth? And are there any tricks to setting them on the path to lifelong oral health early? Let’s talk about it!

Best Toothpaste for Kids

Mama Natural recommends Wellnesse toothpaste and toothbrushes for kids.

When to Start Brushing Kids’ Teeth

Children, even babies, can benefit from all the same oral hygiene practices that you practice for yourself. The ideal age to start brushing will vary with each child, but a good rule of thumb is to start when their teeth begin coming in, which is commonly around six months old. As soon as the first signs of teeth start poking through the gumline, it’s time to put a brushing routine into place twice per day. Make sure you’re cleaning their teeth after their last meal or snack (whether it be food or milk).

Although it may seem optional to brush baby teeth since they’ll eventually fall out, the opposite is true. Believe it or not, baby teeth can decay if they’re not taken care of properly once they pop through the gums. This is a major problem for little ones for a variety of reasons. First, it can impact how their adult teeth grow in down the road. Not only that, but tooth decay can impact their speech development as well. This just goes to show that dental hygiene is crucial to a person’s overall health and well-being – no matter their age.

If you have a newborn, you can even start practicing gum care on your baby before their teeth come in. Using a clean washcloth, gauze pad, or finger brush, gently wipe your baby’s gums and tongue. This can help get them used to teeth cleaning from a young age.

The same can be said for babies that are six months old but whose first tooth hasn’t come in yet. If you start brushing your kids’ teeth too late, it can become a daily battle. But if they grow accustomed to a routine early, brushing their teeth will eventually become second nature. Besides, there’s no better time to form healthy habits than now. Keep in mind – once their first teeth start to pop up, it’s time to switch to a children’s toothbrush.

If your kids have had their first teeth for a while but you haven’t started brushing them yet, don’t stress – what matters most is that you start now! It’s also a good idea to take them for their first dental checkup if they haven’t already been. Remember, introducing proper oral maintenance early will make for less resistance further down the road.

How Can I Get My Kids to Brush Their Teeth?

If you’re the mom of a toddler, your kids can start brushing their teeth on their own (with your supervision). But the question remains: How do you get them to start? For most kids, picking up a toothbrush twice a day is the last thing on their minds. It’s just doesn’t seem very fun. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get them excited about taking care of their oral health.

  1. Make brushing a family routine.

When was the last time you brushed your teeth with your kids? If you haven’t, now is the perfect time to start. Children love to mirror others (especially their parents!). Leading by example is the key to getting your kids to stick to the daily habit. If you get everyone in on the tooth-brushing routine, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a fun family affair. When everyone is involved, your kids will start seeing oral care as a fun activity instead of a chore.

  2. Make it fun.

It’s no secret that brushing your teeth can feel like going through the motions, which makes the twice-daily habit much harder to stick to for little ones. Here’s a secret: If you want to get young kids excited about dental hygiene, try letting them brush your teeth! Another great idea is to create a game out of it or let them practice brushing on one of their toys. The more fun they have getting introduced to the activity, the more likely they are to keep it up.

  3. Reward them.

When your child has been consistent with brushing their teeth, don’t forget to praise them! You can even create a reward system to take their excitement to the next level. One popular method (especially for toddlers) is to create a chart where they can place a sticker each time they brush their teeth. It will make them feel proud of themselves for doing a good job, and it’ll help you keep track of how often they’re brushing. Be sure to give them a prize at the end of the week or month for a job well done!

  4. Use children’s toothpaste that tastes good.

You can do everything in your power to make your kids’ morning and bedtime routine exciting, but if they don’t like the taste of their toothpaste, you’ll have yet another hurdle to get past. Adult toothpaste is often too strong for kids; the peppermint and spearmint flavors can be overpowering for their little mouths. But once you find a gentle toothpaste your kids enjoy, you’ll notice them looking forward to brushing each day.

How Long Should Kids Brush Their Teeth?

Children are notorious for avoiding brushing – even if you’ve involved the family and implemented a reward system, it’s still a task that takes them away from doing other fun activities. If you have young kids, you know it’s not uncommon for them to do a quick 30-second brush and call it a day (or even skip over it entirely!). So, how long is long enough?

According to the American Dental Association, kids should brush their teeth for two minutes, twice per day. Brushing for less than two minutes can result in bacteria remaining on the teeth, causing plaque buildup. Plaque is a soft film that hardens over their teeth, which can lead to tooth decay or even tooth loss over time. Fortunately, this is easily avoidable when you keep up with a regular, healthy routine!

Is It Safe to Swallow Toothpaste?

As a mom, you know babies and toddlers will put almost anything in their mouth (and you better believe they’ll swallow it too!). Unfortunately, most conventional toothpaste contains fluoride, as well as other toxins. Toxic ingredients are dangerous for anyone, but they’re especially dangerous for kids (who have been known to swallow toothpaste from time to time).

So, what happens if your baby swallows toothpaste? If it’s a small amount, it may not be cause for worry – although calling your doctor is always the safest bet. If it’s a larger amount, it can cause stomach pain, discomfort, vomiting and warrant a call to poison control.

At the end of the day, the risk just isn’t worth it. It’s best to cut conventional toothpastes out completely, especially for your kids.

What Is the Best Toothpaste for Kids?

The most important thing to look for when choosing a children’s toothpaste is an all-natural formula. Using clean, non-toxic ingredients is important for people of all ages but even more so for kids’ delicate nervous systems and developing bodies.

Using a high-quality fluoride-free toothpaste, like Wellnesse’s children’s toothpaste, will give you peace of mind. Wellnesse uses clean ingredients designed to keep your little ones’ smiles healthy and bright. Their children’s toothpaste is formulated with calcium carbonate, aloe vera, and hydroxyapatite to gently clean those tiny teeth – without aggravating their bellies!

One of the things kids love most about Wellnesse Children’s Toothpaste is its subtle strawberry flavor. Once they give it a try, they’ll look forward to brushing their teeth as often as you’ll let them. Their toothpaste is free of artificial sweeteners and flavors that can disrupt your kids’ good stomach flora. Most importantly, it is completely safe if swallowed.

When you shop Wellnesse oral care, you have peace of mind knowing your kids are safe. Not only that, but they’ll actually enjoy brushing their teeth every morning and night.

Mama Natural recommends Wellnesse toothpaste and toothbrushes for kids, and for you too!

Do Kids Need Special Toothbrushes?

When it comes to oral hygiene, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Kids need toothbrushes that can gently but effectively navigate all the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. Whether your kids handle their own brushing or you do it for them, they need a toothbrush that’s designed for their needs.

That’s where the Wellnesse Children’s Toothbrushes come in. These biodegradable toothbrushes are designed with a smaller handle and smaller-than-average head to make brushing comfortable and fun! The bristles are soft enough to avoid gum irritation but firm enough to eliminate disease-causing bacteria. Plus, the brushes come in a 3-pack of various fun colors, so your kids can take their pick of what fits their style!

Lastly, if you’re the type of parent who loves making eco-friendly purchases, then you’ll love Wellnesse products even more. Their sustainable toothbrushes are crafted from biodegradable bamboo and recyclable nylon bristles for a zero-waste oral care experience. Nothing feels better than doing your part to save the earth and putting a smile on your kids’ faces. It’s a win-win!

It’s never too early to start focusing on your child’s oral care. Forming healthy oral care habits early on is essential to lifelong health, so there’s no better time to start than now! Fortunately, brushing your kids’ teeth doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right attitude and tools, you can turn it into a fun activity for babies and kids of all ages. When you get them started early, you’re working to preserve their little smiles for many years to come.

2021’s Top 10 Baby Name Changes

The Top 4 Boy Names remained the same, with Liam still king at #1, followed by Noah, Oliver, and Elijah. Our first hint of change on the boys’ side comes in at #5, where James flipped spots with William, who fell to #6. Benjamin is still in 7th place, followed by #8 Lucas and #9 Henry, who also retained their respective rankings. Our big surprise comes at #10, where Theodore burst in from #23 in 2020! Well, it’s not really a surprise, given his plethora of adorable nicknames, handsome sound, and meaning, “God’s gift.” He’s truly a name who has it all. We can’t wait to see how high he climbs in 2022.

On the girls’ side, Olivia is still ruling the roost at #1, followed closely by Emma, who retained her #2 ranking with ease. The rest of the Top 10 for Girls has shuffled a little, with Charlotte at #3, rising a spot to replace Ava, who slipped to #5. Amelia is at #4 after fluttering up from #6 in 2020. Sophia dropped from #5 to #6, while #7 Isabella, #8 Mia, #9 Evelyn, and #10 Harper remain unchanged in ranking.

While not much changed for girls in 2021, 2022 may switch things up. The lovely Luna is now knocking on the Top 10’s door at #11. She’s risen three spots from the previous year’s data, and her friends Camila and Gianna are hot on her heels, so we’ll see if any of these cuties crack into the Top 10 next year.

As for the boys, Jack is ready to conquer at #11 since cruising up a whopping ten spots in the past year. We also see room for Levi, a cool cucumber now at #12 from last year’s #18.

2021’s Top 25 Baby Name Changes

The Top 25 Baby Names for boys and girls saw lots of shuffling in 2021, with a number of familiar faces losing momentum and some surprise picks making appearances.

For the boys, we’ve welcomed Asher, a Hebrew name meaning “happy and blessed,” and Alexander, the trusty classic who slipped out of the Top 10 to land at #13. Asher rose from #32 to #25, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he keeps creeping up the charts. His meaning is amazing, after all. As for Alexander, he’s danced back and forth at the edge of the Top 10 for a few years, so he might see another resurgence in 2022, or he may settle into this new landscape from here on out. He’s a beloved name with the epic meaning “defender of man” and heaps of nicknames, so don’t expect him to fall out of favor anytime soon.

These two new faces replace Theodore and Aiden. As previously mentioned, Theodore entered the Top 10, while Aiden slid from #24 to #26. Theodore is on a roll, so it’s hard to tell if he’ll leave the Top 10 to rejoin his Top 25 friends in 2022. As for Aiden, it’s not looking likely that he’ll come back next year. He and his rhyming -ayden friends (Brayden, Kayden, etc.) are cooling in popularity, with the majority falling in rankings in 2021.

As for potential new faces for 2022’s Top 25 Boy Names, we have our eye on Leo. He’s strong in sound yet approachable, which is always a favorite, and his meaning of “lion” gives him added power. He’s also a space-themed name, with the Leo constellation appearing in the Northern celestial hemisphere.

On the girls’ side of the charts, say hello to Aria and Chloe. Miss Aria is no surprise, as parents love this little lady. With musical ties and a sing-song sound, she is simply breathtaking. As for the cutie Chloe, she’s no stranger to the Top 25, as she’s rocked in and out over the last few years. Expect Aria to stick around for 2022, but don’t be surprised if Chloe plays peek-a-boo and pops out again next year.

The two new ladies replace Mila and Madison. Mila was a shock to see fall from #20 to #26, as she had a strong showing over the last few years. Madison was another surprise, falling from #23 to #29. She’s a former Top 10 staple with surname styling, and she’d grown in 2021. But that’s not always a bad thing, right? If these names were a touch too popular for you before, they might be just right for you now.

So, who might join the 2022’s Top 25 Girl Names? That’s a tough one, but maybe Nora. Her friend Eleanor is lighting up the charts at #15, and she has the vintage vibes that parents are gaga over.

2021 Top 100 Baby Name Changes

The rest of the Top 100 experienced quite the shakeup for boys and girls. Many long-time favorites slipped in popularity while fresh faces surged.

On the boys’ side, four newbies joined us: Waylon, Bennett, Beau, and Weston. We adore the cowboy vibes of this bunch. They’ve replaced Jaxson, Jace, Adam, and Kayden. These departed names are mostly modern monikers with a trendy edge that tends to burn hot and fast, so we’re not too shocked to see them slip, though Adam is a Biblical favorite who’s had a long run in the Top 100. Names making big strides for boys are Luca and Kai, while Hunter and Connor saw some major slippage.

For girls, say hello to Rylee and Athena. Rylee is an alternative spelling to the rambunctious Riley, while Athena is a Greek great meaning “wise.” They replace Samantha, who was once a Top 10 darling, and Brielle, a shortened form of Gabrielle, who has wiggled back and forth near the edge of the Top 100 for a few years. Massive climbs were seen by Josephine and Leilani, while Anna and Samantha saw the biggest drops.

Who might appear in 2022’s Top 100? We can see Rowan and River making their debut for boys, as these natural names are resonating with parents far and wide. Luka is another serious contender, as he and his alternate spelling Luca are gaining serious traction. Liliana is one to watch on the girls’ side, as this determined beauty has been steadily climbing in ranking. Iris might make an appearance as well, since this moniker meaning “rainbow” is a natural vintage name, nailing two megatrends. Keep an eye on Ayla, too. This modern maven has been on our radar for a while, and 2022 looks like it might be her year.

Biggest Chart Climbers of 2021: Boys

While plenty of boy names saw increases in popularity, some standouts truly exploded in usage. These boy names rocked parents’ socks off:

  • Amiri [+543]: Meaning “prince,” this darling wowed, soaring into the Top 1000 for the first time to land at #757.
  • Eliam [+442]: While he feels like a mashup of the mega-popular Elijah and Liam, this Hebrew pick has ancient roots that have helped him climb to #736.
  • Colter [+344]: With dashing good looks and a cowboy edge, this surname standout galloped up to #627.
  • Ozzy [+336]: This member of rock-and-roll royalty roared into the Top 1000 for the first time, arriving at #712.
  • Loyal [+300]: This virtuous wow of a word name hasn’t been in the Top 1000 since 1948, but he rejoined the party at #753 in 2021.
  • Khai [+287]: An Egyptian name, he means “crowned” or “royal one.”
  • Evander [+279]: Hailing from Greece, this charmer has the amazing meaning “good man.”

  • Jiraiya [+251]: This anime-featured find meaning “young thunder” found his footing in 2021.

Biggest Chart Climbers of 2021: Girls

2021 brought major success to so many sweet girl names. These mighty monikers climbed the most on the charts:

  • Raya [+441]: The biggest mover for girls flew up 441 spots to #494, undeniably helped by Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon.
  • Wrenley [+397]: This modern marvel joined the charts for the first time in 2020, but she made a mega leap in her sophomore year.
  • Angelique [+306]: This “messenger of God” is a fancy French sister to Angel.

  • Emberlynn [+284]: This combination cutie hit her stride in 2021, making her debut in the Top 1000.
  • Flora [+278]: With her flowery feel and vintage leanings, Flora floated up to #647.
  • Murphy [+262]: With a fierce meaning like “descendent of the sea warrior,” it’s no surprise that parents can’t get enough of this Irish surname sensation.

  • Ocean [+253]: This word name wonder’s natural beauty runs deep.

Biggest Losses in Popularity: Boys

Some boy names lost significant ground on the charts. This can be attributed to everything from cooling trends to negative pop culture influences. These boy names saw the biggest drops in popularity:

  • Jaxtyn [-349]: Created modern monikers tend to rise rapidly in popularity, but they also fall just as quickly, as seen in this twist on Jackson
  • Karsyn [-254]: Alternative spellings come and go, and this Carson alternate is no different.
  • Xzavier [-236]: As with his original form Xavier, this unique spelling lost steam.
  • Willie [-210]: This twangy form of William has country roots, but they failed to keep him grounded on the charts.
  • Tristen [-202]: Tristan’s alternative spelling plummeted from the Top 1000.
  • Aldo [-200]: This MMA-linked name fought hard on the charts, but he fell to #983.
  • Hakeem [-196]: Meaning “wise,” this handsome Arabic pick’s short-lived stint in the Top 1000 ended in 2021.
  • Bentlee [-193]: This form of Bentley fell out of the Top 1000.
  • Marley [-188]: While this moniker teeters in unisex territory, it’s now leaning decidedly feminine on the charts after losing major spots with boys.
  • Korbyn [-182]: Corbin’s alternate spelling lost his sparkle compared to previous years.

Biggest Losses in Popularity: Girls

Not every name can stay in the spotlight, as these girl monikers learned in 2021:

  • Denisse [-471]: This form of Denise slid out of the Top 1000 entirely.
  • Denise [-360]: A French find, she once ruled the charts in the 1950s and 1960s but has steadily lost favorability since, landing into dreaded “dated” territory.
  • Karen [-263]: Linked to the malevolent manager-seeking stereotype, this Scandinavian form of Catherine continued to lose ground with parents in 2021.
  • Keily [-227]: This “graceful” Irish gem’s short-lived time in the Top 1000 ended in 2021.
  • Nathalie [-221]: 2021 wasn’t the best year for this form of Natalie.
  • Itzayana [-214]: This Mayan moniker lost her place in the Top 1000.
  • Alexa [-213]: The link to Amazon’s mega-popular virtual assistant continues to push this name down the charts.
  • Meilani [-208]: This Jersey Shore cutie couldn’t keep her hold on the Top 1000.
  • Lyanna [-203]: Even the insane strength of her Game of Thrones character couldn’t keep this stunning name from slipping in ranking.
  • Elliot [-201]: This gender-neutral name fell to #773.

2021 Trend Alerts to Watch for in 2022 Names

Amid the sea of names and changes, there are definite trends from 2021 that we predict will continue into 2022.

First up: Hello vintage names. From Theodore busting into the Top 10 for boys to Scarlett and Eleanor gaining ground for the girls, retro names are as fashionable as ever. We foresee more 1920s and 1930s staples climbing the ranks in 2022 as they come back into style, including Betty, Dorothy, and Louise for girls, and Russell, Frederick, and Amos for boys.

We spotted a lot of surnames on the rise, too, including Banks and Bridger for boys and Palmer and Fallon for girls. If you want to nail this style without being too popular, see Monroe and Ellis for girls and Edison and Quincy for boys. This style has been ruling for some time, but it doesn’t show signs of slowing if you’d like to give it a try.

Of course, word names continue to wow, too, like Onyx and Navy. These monikers are perfect for standing out or injecting a little edge into a name, even if you use them in the middle name slot. Opt for natural names like Clover and Rio, or try out religious options like Halo and Deacon. The sky’s the limit, and we don’t see this trend calming down.

What names do you see climbing the charts in 2022? Did your favorite names change much in popularity? Dip? Check out the rankings and eat up all the name goodies. You might find a new favorite.
