Asher Name Meaning

A relative newbie to the Top 1000, Asher has been rising steadily since his arrival. He’s an ancient name with modern appeal, a twist on the Ashton and Ashley trend of the 1970s and 1980s.

A Biblical name, Asher appears as a son of Jacob in the holy texts, going on to start the Tribe of Asher, a group blessed with good looks and fortune. Not too shabby of an association, huh? Less popular that his Biblical buddies Aaron or Noah, Asher is the perfect way to honor your religion without having to worry about popularity.

Asher is a sweet name that fits in with today’s trends. He’s as soft in sound as Liam and Elijah, yet has word name vibes reminiscent of Mason. He also feels like a surname find, right on trend with Jackson or Carter.

Little Asher is gentle as can be, a delicate soul who strives to make others smile. He may do this through acts of kindness or through mischief and comedy, depending on the day. He’s a curious kid who’s always looking for more, a wild imagination leading his way.

Asher is delightful on a little boy, the nickname Ash making him a precious pick. He’s also mature enough to age with ease, never seeming juvenile or incomplete.

  6. My husband made a note in his Bible that “Asher is a good name,” twelve years to the day before I found out I was pregnant with our son. I had liked Asher for years, but chose not to discuss baby names with my husband until I found out we were expecting. We chose our son’s name, Asher Liam, a few days after the positive test. He fits his name perfectly. He is a very happy boy and brings joy to our family and church family. We still love the name and feel it will grow with him into manhood.

  7. My husband and I wanted to choose a name that meant something positive over his life. Asher means happy or blessed and that’s truly our goal is to give him a happy and blessed life.

I discovered his name as a character in a book i was reading and loved the sound of it. I looked up the meaning (happy and blessed) and loved that too. Thankfully hubby liked it too.

  12. In Jewish culture names serve as an aspect of a person’s character. A name can be a blessing…in that every time you say it, it affirms what that name means and you are in essence speaking it over your child. Asher means “happy” and “blessed”…I like the idea that every time I call him by his name, I speak over my son that he will have the joy of the Lord and be blessed.

    • That is so beautiful and I will now think of this each time we say our little one’s name. Thank you for sharing.

Asher Kyle just turned 15 a couple of months ago. I love that wasn’t very common back in 2004. I’ve been seeing it pop up more and more as the years go by. It’s a beautiful name.

  55. We chose it because it is an uncommon name in the Bible that means “happy, blessed”. It is our belief that people tend to live up to their names so we wanted to choose a name that meant something good that we wanted for our baby. We wrote down a bunch of names that we liked and shared them with family and friends. Most people ended up gravitating toward Asher, so we decided on it. 🙂

  56. We couldn’t decide on a name, I prayed a lot one night and asked God to give me his name. The next day, my husband and I were talking and somehow this name came up for the first time. We both cried (for sentimental different reasons), that was a sign to me that it was the right name…and then I remembered praying the night before. So I knew God had given us this name for our/his child!

  57. How did we land on Asher? Friends and Family have all commented on how unusual it is, how much they like it, and how unused it seems to be for a biblical name.

We wanted a name from the Bible… We already have boys named Josiah Nathaniel and Elijah Samuel, so we ruled those out. I realized that if I didn’t want all my kids to have names ending in the -uh sound, now was the time to branch out.

Name meaning is INCREDIBLY important to us, and this baby was a wonderful, prayed-for, long-awaited third child we thought we might never be able to have. Sometime in the last few years, I had seen the name Asher come through my social media news feed, and it stuck with me. When I found out it means “Happy” and “Blessed,” I was sold.

I just had to figure out how to propose it to my husband… His father passed away the year before, and he and his father had shared the middle name Paul. I loved the sound of Asher Paul, and the legacy could live on…

My husband reacted so strangely! Sorta meh, felt like a no, kinda teasing…. I wasn’t sure what to make of it!! Later, he agreed to the name, but I had questions! Like “What changed? I thought you hated that name?” and “If you really do like the name, why did you react so strangely?” He said he was just giving me a hard time since I came up with the idea myself (for the other two boys, we sat down and pulled up name options and researched together). That crazy guy! For a few months, I had myself convinced he hated the only name I wanted!

Asher is 6 months old now, and he has been HAPPY since day one. I am more convinced than ever that name meaning can make a difference in the child’s disposition… He is always content, quick to smile, and so peaceful.

One down side we considered was all the possible nicknames that could rhyme with Asher and be used by unkind peers… Basher, Crasher, Flasher, Gasher, Hasher, Lasher, Masher, Slasher, Trasher… you get the idea. Also wasn’t sure if I liked Ash as a nickname for a boy. Too girly? I ended up deciding it didn’t bother me enough to pick something else! (And this Asher LOVES water, so his brothers decided “Asher Splasher” was a good nickname for now.)

I love the name Asher, and I am so glad it all worked out to use it for this little boy. The name truly fits him, and I have no regrets!

  58. My older children are named Anna, and John. Both names having biblical origins, I liked the idea of Asher, as it’s also biblical. My partner loves Ash trees for carving, and with Ash being a string tree, this also appealed to us both. I liked that it’s a simple name, familiar, yet not so common. My dislikes are that it does sound a lot like other Ash names (Ashton, Ashley).

  59. Asher means “blessed with abundance” his middle name is Zion which is quickly becoming his family name. At this early stage of life he is being called both names and I think both names suit him.

  60. Because of the the meaning (full of joy)

  61. My husband actually picked out the name Asher for the first name because I wanted his middle name to be a Joel, but couldn’t figure out the first name. I wanted something that was masculine yet not super common. I love the meaning of the name: Happy and Blessed. Plus it is a Bible name. The only thing I don’t like is it has ended up being a lot more common than we were hoping for.

  62. We went through several years of infertility. In the midst of our struggles we turned to adoption. We instantly fell in love with Asher Samuel as a name. It means I am blessed or happy (depending on different sources) and Samuel means, because I asked him of God (according to the Bible). Not long after entering into the adoption journey, we brought our sweet boy, Asher Samuel, to his forever home.

  63. We heard the name while reading the Bible one day and it kinda got stuck in our heads and hearts. So when we became pregnant it was our top option for a boy! It has a beautiful meaning too: happy, fortunate, blessed. ? we pray these things for our son always!
