Inspired by the hazelnut tree, Hazel is an English name that can also refer to a greenish-brown color commonly seen in eyes. Mysterious and whimsical, Hazel is bound to make heads turn with her chic style and cool vibes.

Like other color names Violet and Scarlett, Hazel has been lighting up the charts recently with her hue. While not as wild as Fuschia or Magenta, she’s got an exotic flair thanks to her fashionable inner Z. She also has some fabulous contenders in the nickname category with Haze, Hazy, and Zelly.

Her botanical roots fit in well with the rise of Willow and Lily though not as frilly as the trending floral monikers we see today. She’s humble and proud, avoiding the juvenile feel of some cutesy names, aging well into womanhood. She’s also decidedly posh and a smidgen British, similar to Eliza or Alice.

While quite common in the U.S. up until the 1960s, Hazel went dormant in popularity until reemerging in the late 2000s. This can be attributed to her appearance in celebrity baby name announcements around the time though her style resonated with the public, already loving on braver choices than the traditional Emily or Isabella.

  3. When my husband and I were dating we talked about having kids in the future. I said If we had a girl I liked the name Hazel Grace. A couple years later after we got married and found out we were expecting a girl we started calling her Hazel. A lot of people ask if it’s a family name or if she is named after the fault in our stars character but my husband and I just both liked it.

  4. I got to name my grand daughter and Hazel was top of mind! My suggestion was instantly accepted and since I love vintage names…my grandma was Stella, my kitty is named Mabel and i fell in love with the name Hazel so it was a trifecta of perfection for names in my life path!
    Hazel Mae Elise is her full name and it suits her perfectly! ppl always comment on the originality of her name in this time baby names! She is perfectly suited to her name as well …I love u Hazie Daisy!!!

  5. Her 2 brothers (Cardon 6 and Dash 5) originally named her. Cardon picked Scarlett and Dash chose her middle name Rose. Her dad was supposed to name her, like he did both boys. However, he didn’t like anything he saw on numerous name list until he saw the name Hazel. It was right before she was born. Her brothers didn’t want to give up their names, so those became her middle names. It is a long name yet so special that they all picked a name for her. Hazel Scarlett Rose

  8. We knew we wanted an old-fashioned family name that’s easy to spell and easy to pronounce. I loved Penelope and my husband loved Elizabeth but we knew neither of those were the perfect fit. After our 20 week milestone came and went, I was convinced we’d have to meet our baby face to face before we’d know her name for sure. But then one night on the couch, my husband looked at me and said “How about Hazel? Hazel Belle” and I burst into tears and we knew that was it!

  9. I absolutely love my name. Born in the 1970’s, Growing up I only ever met one other person my own age with my name. I was named after my grandmother. My parents were told they were having a boy. My name was supposed to be Patrick. I was such a large baby they had to knock my Mom out. When she came to she discovered that I was a girl and my Dad had already named me. She was not happy with his choice. I am so glad that she was knocked out lol she did not have a girls name picked out but said she probably would have named me Karen if she was conscious. All my friends call me Haze, Purple Haze, some call me Hazel Basil or Hazel Appraisal. I am very proud to be a Hazel.

  12. I wanted her to have a strong older name so I looked up names from the 1900s and found Hazel and Grace (not super uncommon but still a good name). I liked Hazel and my husband liked Grace. We compromised and chose Hazel as her first name and Grace as her middle name. We love her name and get compliments on it all the time. It definitely fits her redheaded personality!

  14. She is named after my grandmother Hazel who passed away before I was born. I always knew I would name my first daughter after her. I later found out the name means “God sees.” For her middle name she is named after the middle name of my husband’s mom, Louise, who also passed away before I had the chance to meet her. I found out that Louise means “famous warrior.” So together her name is “God sees a famous warrior.”

  15. We don’t name our kids until after they are born so that we actually have a chance to meet them and see what their name should be. We both liked the name Hazel because it’s not too common but not totally out there, a little old fashioned and she looks like a Hazel!
    I also really like names that are spelled simply and hard to make Nick names out of (Samantha: is it Samantha or Sam or Sammy?)

  19. Well i came up with “Hazel” because my sister was playing the game “Choices” on her phone and her characters name was Hazel and i thought that was so cool. So I decided to name her Hazel. Her middle name is “Raelynn” and the “Rae“part comes from my dad, his middle name is Ray; and “Lynn” is from my grandma Debbie that passed away. That was her middle name.

Only thing i was i could have spelled it like Hazell but her father wasn’t having it lol.   21. This was a family name – my husband’s grandmother. I knew I wanted it for a girl’s name since we were dating. I started getting nervous when it started getting a little popular, but I’ve only met a few others. We balanced out an older first name with a contemporary and gender neutral middle name – Hazel Quinn. She’s our little “Hazel Basil!”
